First Broody

I just had my first broody, and we are the proud momma of a cute little chick

. Mine was the same way, she never left and then I put a small chick waterer and a small food dish next to her and she actually laid there and just stretched her neck to eat and drink. hehe it was so funny. But she did fine, she did start to get up once a day or every other day or so and relieve her self. She is in a converted rabbit cage. Now that baby is here momma is eating and drinking like crazy, so don't worry she knows what to do.

Nothing today. I am giving it until Friday, then I will pull the eggs.

I don't know if you've been ready other of my posts, but she got off the eggs and I think they got too cold. We will see. She also broke one egg, but it wasn't any good anyway. Long story short...I have 2 broodys. I put #2 on these eggs, gave #1 a bath yesterday, she wanted the eggs back, so I put them back under her, I thought I heard pipping the other day, now nothing.

BUT....I won eggs in the auctions. White Orps. I just bought a few more eggs today. 8 Wheaten Ameraucana, 2 Langshan, 1 Buff silkie, 1 barred cochin, and 17 Button Quail. Another BYC member near me has agreed to hatch these in her incubator. And will also have some EE.

I'll keep you posted about the eggs I have now though. It's been a rough couple days, that's for sure.

I'm sorry ford mommy I was hoping you'd have some babies to tell me about.

My broody is still setting. I candled and all twelve are viable so far.

I think I forgot to mention that one got broke by my DD who tried to get her up for a bite to eat while I wasnt looking. (she's 5) Oh well. Twelve is more manageable anyway. She still wont eat and drink much but I am hoping all will be well in the end. Two of the eggs look to be a day or two behind the rest which is what we expected. The reason we moved her is because one of my dominiques kept trying to climb on top of her and lay eggs which my broody took as her own. She is on day 13. 8 more to go.

Fordmommy.....I'm sorry. Are you going to give the broody's more eggs or break them of their broodiness?

krstms.....good luck with your hatch. Sounds like things are going well so far. (aside from DD's "help" - I have 2 boys, so I know their version of "helping")

This is my broody Henny Penny

As you can see she is in a rabbit box. That's all I could find in a pinch when we moved her. Here is her clutch.

And this is the one that survived from my first batch. Butterscotch, I'm thinking he may be a roo. What do you think?

Thanks you guys. I haven't given her eggs. I actually am being really mean. I take them both off and kick them outside. It only lasts 10-15 min. I have been overly treating them for a job well done. I have eggs to put under them, put now I'm afraid. Maybe when it's warmer. These 2 girls are known to be broody. I can get them to be broody in a couple months.

krstms-I gave my girls scrambled eggs and sliced hard boiled eggs and bananas and strawberries right there on the nest. It goes over very well.

If you're kids want to feed her, let them help this way. Have them toss/drop the food right by her neck.

Well we're down to 10 or 11 eggs. ONe of the ones that was slow to develop quit and developed a bacteria ring so I tossed it. The other one is iffy. All 10 of the others had babies moving inside.

I will probably leave them alone from here on and just let momma take care of it. cant wait!!

Krstms.... Love your broody pics. The babies from your last hatch are adorable. It's hard to tell from the angle of the picture, but I'm thinking Butterscotch is a roo. (a tail shot from the side would confirm this) The other 2 have beautiful coloring and look like pullets. (from the angle)

for the 10 eggs. Good luck!
