First Bumblefoot Surgery Last Night...Pics

Yay Chicks! :

Wow. That was impressive! Where might us non-medical people get things like a scalpel, syringe etc. ?

Amazon.com, of course for the scalpels! You can usually get syringes and needles from the better stocked feed stores too. When ordering scalpels for this type of procedure I think the #11 blade is best. The bigger rounded ones would just get in the way. I like to use a 20 gauge needle and a 3 to 10 cc syringe first to try to aspirate some of the pus before making the incision. When it is under so much pressure as my girl's was, it can squirt out as soon as the thing gets opened up. By aspirating some out before cutting, you reduce the pressure and lessen the chance of getting it where it could cause injury to you or your helper.

Aw, great pics. I have no idea what bumblefoot is and I hope I never have to do that surgery but wanted to say that the pic with the bandage and safety pin is adorable!!

What a lucky chicken to have you care for it.

Great post on your blog. I noticed you used some type of small container for soaking her foot, can you add some details about that? I have been making my hen stand in a sink full of warm water and epsom salts and we both get tired of that quickly. Whatever towel I use to wrap her up with just ends up all wet when she flaps around. Would prefer to use something to just soak the one foot while the rest of her stays dry.

Thanks!

You're my hero.

I have seen other bumblefoot procedures that were done by seasoned professionals, all very informative, but because this was your first it gives me hope that if I ever have to do it, I can. Also helps to know whether I have the right supplies on hand. I bought a "kit" with different suture material from Amazon so I have that, but I am not sure that the "scalpel" I bought is #11 or not. I see I can buy those from Amazon too so in my next order I'll get those. Just in case.

Again, thanks.
