First crows ... and I MISSED them!

5 am. Jeepers!

I was whining about mine waking me up at 5:30 / 5:45 am, but 5 am is sooooooo freakin' early. Mine didn't crow until 6:30 am today. I have a head ache.(Prob allergies) but crowning doesn't help it. My husband wants to get rid of roo.

FINALLY!!!

LOL, who woulda thought I could get this excited over a silly rooster crowing???

Probably I'll be wanting to tape his beak shut in a few weeks just like you all said, but this morning at about 7:30 I heard two perfect little crows from out there. I didn't get to SEE them, so I'm not positive which one it is, but I'll bet it's the Jap.

He waited until a nice, decent hour (7:30), and they were actually very quiet crows. If it stays like this, it'll be perfect! (Although I'm certainly not counting on it!)

Maybe I should go ahead and buy a box of earplugs and send you all some? Sorry about your roo crowing at 5 am ... yikes!

Oh, and it's getting better here. A couple days ago it felt fallish in the air in the morning. It does still get hot during the day, but not so bad that you feel like you're going to melt just from walking outside. Still mid-90's I think. I guess a little breeze and little less humidity makes all the difference. It's actually pleasant in the mornings for the last few days.

Yesterday most of the chickens actually stayed outside most of the day for the first time ever since I built the coop. And I didn't even go out and wet down the ground! It was cloudy, and rained a little, so it stayed much cooler.

I don't know if I can expect it to hold ... August is WAY too early for it to cool down here. But it's a VERY nice little break!

I hope the same for everyone who is sweltering this summer!

Well done, I hope he stays nice and quiet and sleeps in on the weekend for you.
My little roo is a watchdog,
If some loud ( big nite out on the beer !) young people walk past my house throughout the night, he will start alerting everyone that theres some houligans hanging around. doesnt matter what time it is!
so if my neighbours slept through the ruccus going on out on the footpath, they certainly get woken up to the ruccus going on in my chookhouse.
So your little fella may crow at 12am, 1am, 2am and so on if you have loud people walking past your house in the middle of the night. make him (roo) some earmuffs!

Good to know, I didn't realize they crowed for those kinds of reasons. It's pretty quiet out here at night. Nobody walking past after about 8pm normally (and the evening walkers are a quiet bunch anyway).

I hope that means he MIGHT alert me to raccoons, 'possums, or similar intruders, if any come. That would be nice. Then again, our little cat is staying out until 1am these days now, practicing hunting giant grasshoppers and other dangerous prey, so the roo may just get used to a little bit of noise outside the coop.

Thanks for sharing this. I didn't know they did that.

Our coop's aways away from the house, so they never wake us up. I've heard our stupid roo's crowing at 4:00

, probably earlier.

They start crowing before the sun even starts THINKING about rising.

I have the same problem. He mad a noise that was just horrible and sounded like something was dying and my neighbor heard that. Then Monday my neighbors heard him crow again.

I'm glad you got to hear your rooster! LOL!

Ours are about the same age as yours. We only have one rooster (mystery chick from McMurray...suprise ). He has been crowing for a few weeks. You daughter is soooooo right about the sound...the first crows DO sound like a rubber ducky getting stepped on!

Tess crows between 5:30am and 5:45am...maybe 5 or 6 times. He crows again when he and the girls want out to roam...around 6:30am. Then he crows when he hears things:

...a neighbor has a parrot that stays outside. Tess and the parrot talk during the day (the parrot is a few houses away too!)

...when any of us pull up in the car

...when a dog barks

...when the kids come home from school on their bikes

...right before bed

He keeps us on our toes. Our neighbors said they are fine with him (when he first started crowing). We need to make the rounds again to see if he is waking anyone up too early.
