Welp it finally happened. After being very excited that all 8 of my babies survived the brooding, survived the move to their new shed, and survived their first couple weeks outside. I finally had my first death. Little "Ruby", a 9 week old Barred Plymouth Rock. We have no clue how or why. We just found her in the driveway when we got home. I did not find any bite marks, blood, or anything that would suggest it was from a predator. But at the same time, there is nothing about how we found her that could even hint do what happened. Any thoughts? Predators that would not leave bite marks, like a snake's constriction maybe? Regardless, very sad. Crazy how attached we get to them in a short couple of weeks.

This is a sad case and I am truly sorry for your loss. While I may be of no help at the moment, consider making the investment for a game camera and place it where your birds stay. It's a good way to see potential predators and keep an eye on your birds in case something like that happened. (Some people even get live feed cameras to help watch over them).
My only thoughts are that if she was in the driveway, is it possible someone might have hit her?

Does she normally have access to the driveway?

I interrupted a hawk in my run this morning after it killed one of my 6 wk old chicks. No real injuries observable on the chick unless you really dug under the feathers, possibly broke it's neck first. Could have been anything that killed it then got chased off/ran off.
