First Egg Countdown

My cuckoo marans laid her first egg! Of course that was the day I sent my husband down to collect eggs and he didn't realize it was a new pullet's egg. But here is her 2nd egg on the right, next to my ameraucana (who lays a really light greenish egg) and BCM egg...

I can't wait til my babies start a laying. I heard the egg song yesterday and we have had some squatting from the Red Stars, but alas, still no egg.

Does anyone know when Bantam Cochins start laying? I have 2, one frizzle, one smooth that are 16 weeks.

Thanks, Kimberly

That there is the prettiest handful of eggs I've seen in a while.

I have a barred rock hen who is about 19 weeks old. She sits a lot as if she were getting ready to lay an egg, but she is awfully quiet. No BAWKing or "egg song" noises that I have noticed. Just a lot of quiet sitting. The rest of the hens ( 1 RIR and 2 black stars, all the same age) will be strutting around scratching and poking around while she just sits. Anyone seen anything like it? Is this a tease or should I be on the look out for the elusive first egg?

Thanks everyone - I was so excited to get 3 eggs for the first time today!
The darker egg in the middle is my black copper - the lighter one is from the cuckoo pullet. Both came from good lines. I got them about 4 weeks ago, I think. The BCM was maybe 23-24 weeks when she first laid, and the cuckoo is maybe 26-28 weeks old now? The BCM's eggs were lighter initially but have gotten darker, so I'm hoping the cuckoo's will darken up a little. But cuckoo's don't lay as dark as black coppers so I am not going to expect too much.
I am hoping to cross some of the marans with my ameraucanas or EE's to make a few olive eggers, eventually.
I have a silver laced wyandotte that is about 16 weeks old now. Her comb is starting to get pretty pink...so I think she should be next!

You absolutely should be looking for the first egg!

Yours are very close.

Hi all,

My EE laid again today. She has been laying for a couple of weeks, but has not been regular. Today there was a large increase of her eggs size, after not laying one for three days.

This is picture of my eggs. The blue one is from my EE. The dark one in the center is an RIR egg, the specked one is from A Black Australorp. The one on the far right is from a Blue Marans. The other three are Golden Comet and Barred Rock eggs.
