First Egg Countdown

You absolutely should be looking for the first egg!

Yours are very close.:yesss:

Ron

Thanks - I am so excited for that first egg. We have out of town guests coming in 2 weeks. Hopefully we will be able to make them some awesome home grown omellettes! now if only all the tomatoes in the garden would turn color we would really be cooking. C'mon ladies -lay those eggies!

Just beginning our countdown as my hens are just 14 weeks- but check out the comb on Bea. Maybe she'll be the first ;)
Pretty girl with a pretty, red comb! I am suspecting my blue andalusians of being really close, because their combs and wattles have really grown in the past week or so...gonna try to get pics of them tomorrow. So much excitement with all of these almost-there girlies!!!

You would think we were all pregnant waiting for our first newborn! hahaha! I love the excitement! With the way the economy is going, it's good to be excited about something! Right?!!

I can't stand it! It's driving me nuts. I go outside and I'll hear the "egg song", I go check the coop and nothing. Everyone is just sitting there quietly looking at me like, "You gonna let us out now or what?" No egg, nothing.

Then everyone storms the coop door waiting for me to let the little buggers out. Today I went in the coop to check the nests and the floor of the coop and who joins me but....drum roll please..."Lucy",, she is my white Bantam Cochin. Now normally this girl is pretty skiddish around me but it was as if she went in there to say "whatcha doing"? Here I'll help you look!

Her face is pretty pink, but she's only a little over 16 weeks old. I'm expecting "Pebbles" one of my Red Stars to be the first to lay. Arrg! I even bought a dozen eggs at the store on Sunday thinking, "this will make em lay this week"! Come on girls, y o u c a n d o i t!

my 3 chickens are 20 weeks old today, still no egg! Yes, I know that patience is a virtue!! There is a lot of squawking and singing going on, and the Buff Orpington and Wyandotte's comb and wattles are pretty red. The Buff O. was really clucking this morning though I haven't observed any squatting yet. Any day now! Counting down...

Yes, it's carzy.

they lay eggs all day long sometimes. Hens are on a 23 to 25 hour per egg cycle. Each hen will have her own. Some will lay an egg close to the same time each day and then take a day off. Others will lay one at 8 today, 9 tomorrow...until it gets too late in the day and will start over again the next morning at 8:00.

So lucky you! You get to check the nest boxes all day long, not just in the morning

. On Work days, I check the nest box int the evening when I get home. On weekends, I check several times a day, especially when it gets over 100 degrees.

I hope you get one today!

It's great to have you here!

Not all hens will squat for you. If you have a rooster the will squat for him and not for you.

Just when you think yours won't lay, that is when you will find the first egg.

Bye,

Ron

Thanks everyone - I was so excited to get 3 eggs for the first time today!
The darker egg in the middle is my black copper - the lighter one is from the cuckoo pullet. Both came from good lines. I got them about 4 weeks ago, I think. The BCM was maybe 23-24 weeks when she first laid, and the cuckoo is maybe 26-28 weeks old now? The BCM's eggs were lighter initially but have gotten darker, so I'm hoping the cuckoo's will darken up a little. But cuckoo's don't lay as dark as black coppers so I am not going to expect too much.
I am hoping to cross some of the marans with my ameraucanas or EE's to make a few olive eggers, eventually.
I have a silver laced wyandotte that is about 16 weeks old now. Her comb is starting to get pretty pink...so I think she should be next!

Actually, I've heard somewhere that Marans can take a while for thier ink cartridges to fully warm up. So your cuckoo should get with the program soon.

And I'm with you Flowerbh, we do deserve something to be super excited and happy about!

Thank you for the welcome ! I have been asking the hens every day if they are going to lay an egg today. I shall stop asking and pretend not to care. I have been told that this is also a surefire way to get that first egg.
