First Egg Countdown

One chicken laid the first egg a week ago Monday (the 13th). Another started laying the following Sunday. I got two eggs in the same nest box yesterday and the day before. Today I came home to find 4 eggs (2 in each box) and one was mint green!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yippee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Both EEs started squatting earlier this week, so I'm hoping for 5 eggs soon, 2 of them green/blue. Only 2 girls to go, the Wyandottes.

I'm amazed at how fast the eggs are piling up in the fridge!! Seems I need to cook this weekend, especially now that I have 4 laying.

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats on all the eggs. And arent the green eggs fun!? Time to start eating daily egg breakfasts.

7L- Wow. What a gorgeous dark red. Are they bigger than other chickens? I know everything is bigger in Texas. ;) Seriously though, I am wondering about their average weight.

Happy Chooks- I think mine is a little darker, I will have to stalk this weekend. :D
There bigger than there mom. The father was a big ol boy. I got what I wanted big red chickens. Here's dad. I had to put him down though he went south on me. My third flock of Texas Reds are stunning to me. Different roo for the father. I just like red chickens & brown eggs.

Quote: Yes, sorry, I forgot that part. Wellies should have a more stocky appearance - Leghorns are more long/lean.

I looked up the leghorn in the SOP - Welsummers tail angle is supposed to be at 60 degrees. Brown Leghorns tail angle should be 35 degrees. Also Brown Leghorn hens are not supposed to have shafting on the feather, but it is a requirement of welsummer hens. On the males, Brown Leghorns should have a solid black chest - welsummers are a black/reddish brown mix, with the brown being no more than 20%.

I watched the girls today, as they went into the hen house to lay. I figured out Agnes is laying green eggs; well, today at least. The other small brown one came from my Splash BLRW bantam. So, now I know I have the GL Wyandotte, my BO, and the other EE to go. I love solving a mystery.

So, my EE started laying last Saturday. Like I said, I was a little disappointed that the eggs weren't blue or green. They are a light pale pink and they are really small....BUT, she has laid an egg every day since! 7 eggs in 7 days! wow! So, i have 4 more chickens who are 23 + weeks old who are still not laying. So today I have to go to the store and when I come back my husband tells me to go check the nesting boxes because he heard the egg song. So I run out there all excited because my 3 hens that are laying had already laid an egg and I was thinking that one of the others had had a first egg. So, I look in the nest and there is this HUGH hugh egg in there half buried under the shavings. So I'm thinking...OMG, this is hugh, it must be a triple yoker! And then I pick it up......and hear laughter as I discover the hugh egg was a large smooth oval shaped potatoe! Yes, DH was standing in the door laughing his head off! How mean can you get!!!! LOL! So check my signature to see where he rates today!
So, after the potatoe incident, I went out to the coop this morning and found these three eggs. From left to right...one from my EE (should have been blue or green!!!), one from my barred rock and the hugh one from my Rhode Island Red! The white one is a large store bought egg for comparison! So my DH now claims that his putting the potatoe in the nest was just trying to tell the chickens how he likes his eggs and they listened! hahaha.... I guess we will find out if it is a double yoker in the morning!
