First Egg Countdown

I'm really new to this game, but I have a hard time figuring out why anyone would not want a few red sex links in their flock. My two were the first to lay, haven't missed more than a day or two since they started a month ago, already are laying a nice large egg, don't fight, hardly ever squawk, and are quite attractive on top of it all. Sophie, your Nugget looks like she could be a sister to my Lucy and Ethel.

I've gotten three eggs this week! Saturday/Sunday/Monday they're small and pink. Three possible layers are PBR, lavender Orp, or Black Star....all are about the same age 20/21weeks but I haven't figure out who it is. I suspect the PBR she's been in and out of the nesting boxd making LOTS of unusual (loud) noises

Congrats!

My bet is on the Ophington.

Come on Nutella...yesterday was your 34th week birthday! You are no 8.5 months and no eggs! Please? Just one little egg?

Here she is. Her comb is getting redder, so I'm getting more hopeful!

OMG! 34 weeks! Are you sure she's not hiding them from you? She sure is pretty, though. I have a few who are 27 weeks old and no egg....I hope I don't have to wait as long as you!!! Makes you just want to squeeze them out, doesn't it! I have a brown leghorn who has such a big comb it folds over. She is only 22 weeks old, but that is late for a leghorn. I think I am going to keep her in the run for a few days to see if she is really laying or not....she is so flighty that I wouldn't doubt that she is laying in the woods somewhere.

These are the very first two chickens I can call my own! Two Exchequer Leghorn pullets, hatched 4/16 (at least, that's what I was told). Here they are when I first brought them home in mid-June:

Here is a pic from just a few days ago:

Obviously one is far more developed than the other. I really thought they'd be laying by now. I can't get close enough to them to check their vents, not that I would know what to look for, anyway. I did find this poop today, which to my eye looks like an egg yolk. Is that what it is? Or is this just standard chicken poop? (Sorry for the gross factor):

I think I saw my two 16 week old SLW pullets squat for my SLW Rooster (who has yet to crow) today. And when I went to pick them up and put them in my lap to pet them, they did not squat for me, but as soon as I started petting them, the wings went out (like how they held them in the 100 degree heat this summer) and their tail went straight up.

Is that technically squatting? Could this be a sign that the time is near? I honestly wasn't expecting eggs from the Wyandottes for another 4 weeks or so and certainly not before my leghorn, who should in theory start any day now. I will be super surprised if they all start around the same time...

We took the board that has been blocking access to the nest boxes out on sunday after de-thatching the lawn provided some great stuff to line the boxes with... also have some old golf balls in there.

No more counting down for me!!! Yaaaaaay! I was screaming like a moron and the chickens looked at me like I was crazy. Out of the 5 bantams, I don't know which one laid but it was just outside the nesting box. It is just a teeny tiny thing. So cute. Happy Day!

AAWW so cute, congrats

Sorry this ones so long b/c I liked so many of these posts and pics!!!

I know I just posted here, but we got our first EE egg today! It's so pretty! It's blue-green, but a little more on the green side. I was surprised at how bright the color was, I was half-expecting a dull gray since she came from hatchery stock. The egg weighed 1.4 oz

The other eggs are from my Cinnamon Queens and they weigh 1.5, 1.7, and 1.9 oz.

These are gorgeous eggs! I am jealous of your green one!!! All mine are various shades of brown.

I cant beleave it I finally have all four hens laying. I got 4 eggs on Thursday. They are 23 weeks, 3 are orpingtons, 1 Australorp. I dont have pics of the eggs but I have pics of them.

Awww, these girls are so cute!! I love seeing the variety of colors in a flock!
