"I hope you're right", she said with chin in hand waiting patiently for this pretty black bird to get redder, do the squat and end this seemingly endless wait that's driving her nuts and she's trying so hard not to show it while her DH looks at her like she's slightly off her rocker.

I know, they grow up so fast, but still take FOREVER to lay. But once you taste that egg, you'll never go back to store bought anemic eggs.

You can fire anyone's hens that arn't performing to your expectations. It could be a new reality tv show.

I'm so happy, I got the final egg I was waiting for yesterday! The infamous Darla finally laid! She's very blonde, so it was in the run, and the egg coloration was all crazy and uneven, but A for effort!

WOOHOOOO!!!! OUr first egg!!! We have no idea who laid it but I think it was our Red sex-link or Barred rock! I was so eggcited I didn't put anything by it at first to show size but it is a large size egg for the first egg I think! The first picture shows it after I washed it off and the color shows darker. When it dries it gets this white film over it. Anyone know why this happens?????

That looks like it came from you SL, it's about the same color as what mine lasy (I think she's a NHxCuckoo Marans cross). Barred Rocks lay ligther eggs as a general rule.

The white film is called the 'bloom'. It's a protective coating that prevents bacteria from entering the pores of the egg. In fact, it does it's job so well that if you don't scrub it off, you can just leave the eggs out on the counter for weeks, and they won't spoil.

Grats again!
