First Egg Countdown

Alright! Hypothesis time...

So... you guys know that I have been keeping ridonculously detailed records on my chickens' laying habits...

The five chickens that are laying started laying eggs as long as they had at least 9 hours and 48 minutes of daylight... give or take... Two of my ladies apparently "missed" that "cutoff time"... A SLW, and an EE.

As of Jan 15th, we'll be back up to 9 hours and 45 minute days. So if logic follows... I should expect them to start laying anytime after Jan 15th.

Now, if breed plays a factor, my other Wyandotte started laying when there was still at least 10 hours 11 minute in a day. And if Wyandottes need more light than EEs then I shouldn't expect to see an egg from Nandi until after Jan 30th.

Of course... this could all be futile speculation that has no bearing whatsoever on when they will start... but it is fun (to me)... so... yeah!

Aaawwwww, SNAP! It's January 11th... just 4 days away from that magical 9 hour and 45 minute day... And guess who I just caught inspecting the nest box for the first time ever?

Both of these ladies... BOTH!

Hahaha! That's awesome! Don't tell them about your predictions though, or they'll hold it in just to show you that they are magical and special creatures that can't possibly be predictable.

Much to my surprise, I found 3 eggs in my silkie pen a few days ago! I'm wondering if two started laying at the same time??? But - no eggs since, it's been 4 days! LOL
I stuck the 3 in the incubator, since I just started a batch 2 days before, and 2 of the 3 are definitely developing. The third one I'm not sure about. I'm really excited to hatch out some of my first homegrown chicks!

Next to my two EE eggs and a store bought white egg...they make a nice pastel rainbow!

I caught Saffron (the EE) going in there by herself on her own to check the nest boxes out... I caught Nandi (the SLW) sticking her head in the nest boxes while my EEs were all lying on their backs in a funny little EE pile being ridiculous and rolling around in the bedding on the coop floor... So she may have only looked in there because she was already in there... but Saffron... Saffron was DEFINITELY scouting.
