First Egg Countdown

I am still waiting on a "first egg" from 3 Dominque girls I hatched way back on January 27, 2011. None look all that mature still yet! Guess they will be "late layers"... of course, this is the norm for me as my RIR pullet, Trudy, took until 32 weeks to lay!
A question though: back around 4 1/2 months ago I rescued a White Leghorn hen, Seraphim, who was underweight, barebacked and half bald on her head and body. She was listless and sickly acting, and had worms/mites/lice. I treated her for all and now she is a vibrantly beautiful and healthy little lady and is one of my favorites. However, I do not know her actual age, although she seems to be no older than a year. Never had an egg from her... why? And is there hope that one day she will lay?
Not trying to hijack, but just hoping for an answer!

YUP! My perfect brown egg yesterday came from our 17 week old Red Sex-Link!!! I watched her lay today! How special! She is the first one of our little flock of 11 pullets. Today's egg was a little smaller, but just as perfect! But BOY was she drained after! Holding her wings out the whole time and gulling. She was the only one in the coop so I gave her 5 meal worms and she gulped down a bunch of water after! Poor little girl! LOL! But she was so happy with herself!!!!
I thought for sure my BR was going to go up and lay, she stood in the run and did a 5 minute long egg song while Miss. Henny Penny was laboring with her egg! I think our BR was just giving her support because she ran off after her song! HAHAHAHA!

I am anxiously awaiting the first egg, as well. I have six RIR pullets, 18 1/2 weeks old. One has a bright red comb, wattles, and eye area, and another is close behind her. I can't stand the wait much longer!!!

Glad you nursed her back. Sounds like she almost died it probably took everything she had to stay alive. Give her time she might start laying again. Feed her high protein feed & laying pellets . Good luck with her. My rescued chickens my favorite as well. Here she is when I first got her she had to hide from the flock. But the others have finally accepted her.

My husband opened up the coop today to see what the heck one of our BR's was bawking about, and got to see an egg being laid up close. I don't think he'll ever be the same. First time for both for them.

BigDaddy'sGurl, your hen was probably discarded because she is older, which means that she probably won't lay frequently. Or it could just be that she's recovering from all the abuse she suffered, and will get back on track once her body is ready. Reproduction is a luxury for most species, and if an animal isn't in good enough health, their body will stop reproductive activity such as ovulation (egg-laying).

I happened to open the door just as my EE was beginning to lay an egg. That was COOL, not gross. These are men just wimps!
Still waiting for my Black Pearl to lay. She's getting so big -- bigger than my EE that's laying. If the people I bought her from were correct about her age, she's nearly 6 months. But then again, they said she was a BSL -- I wonder what breeds, Jersey Giants???
