First Egg Countdown

It is indeed a double yolker! We are eating our very first home grown-super fresh eggs this morning. For all the folks that have been doing this chicken thing forever, thanks for sharing in our newbie excitement. This truly is one of the most fun things I've done in my life and I have a long list of great adventures. Hoping all of you waiting for eggs have a surprise in the nest box really soon!

Juni - her eggs will get larger. It's a very gradual process, and if you are not weighing them, you likely won't notice it much. Then when she goes through her first adult molt, you may see another big jump in size. (this is when my BR went to Jumbo sized eggs)

How old are Koko and Scarlett? Neither of them look red enough to be laying really soon. Maybe 2-3 weeks still? Koko looks like she'll be before Scarlett.

Koko started squatting today and she checked out the nest too. I am thinking 7-10 days the most?

I am really egg poor right now! Lost 5 chickens to a bear when it tore down the run door. Also lost two chickens to hawks last month! So, I lost most of my brown egg layers. My 2 white egg layers are now molting and not laying. I have two chickens who are broody and not laying! My 18 month old barred rock is broken I guess. No eggs from her since April. So out of 13 hens, I am only getting 4 - 6 eggs a day. Bummer. I have replaced those chickens that died....they are now 2 weeks old. Have some juveniles who are 15 weeks old and 4 older pullets who range from 27 weeks to 21 weeks that are still weeks away from laying! So will be a while before my egg count is up again! Here are photos of some of my eggs.

Before my white eggs layers stopped laying last week and started molting!

Most these eggs are from my newer hens.

That certainly is strange. Can you post some pictures of the chicken and the coop? Are they getting enough sunlight? Do they look sick or are normal? Have you checked for lice or mites on their bodies or in the coop? Here is a helpful article about it:

Your 15 month old birds should be starting their molt.  Are you seeing lots of feathers around?

   I have a few that will scrape the nest box down to the wood.  They are overachievers in nesting.
I posted some pics. Hope you can see them. Thanks

Update on my girls....3 BR only one laying about every other day for about 2 wks now. The other two are not far behind. One has started the "loner" behavior - goes off by herself doesn't want to be bothered w ith the rest of the flock. Hopefully a couple more days for her. The EE is looking more and more like a rooster but still holding out hope, and the beautiful Wyandotte has started crowing :( just got 7 more peeps so hopefully by Easter next year some will be laying. This is the most interesting journey. I live in a suburb and I work I'm the city. My co workers probably thimk I'm crazy but I am a proud chicken owner.

Flower - I'm so sorry you have had losses. Bears are so devastating to a flock. I hope you have better luck going forward.

Kpsocal - yes it's normal. Their bodies are adjusting to laying.
