First Egg Countdown

ok so I have eight out of twelve hens that are of laying age....they r all 24 weeks....my speckled sussex has been laying for almost three weeks...one of my two jersey giants is soooooooo ready....every sign you can get for like two weeks now and nothin...one of my two buffs is squatting as are both of our light brahmas, which surprises me cause everyone said they were the latest bloomers and I got two eggs in the last four days that I do not think came from the Sussex....just curious how do you tell the diff in the eggs....the two new ones are a slightly different shape and lighter then all the others....is it safe to say I have a new layer?

Possibly, you have to catch them laying, then you will know who is laying which eggs.

I have 5 barnie pullets I'm anxiously awaiting them laying. They hatched 3/24, so it should be any time now.

what r Barnie pullets? it is so frustrating...I just want to sit a watch them til I know who it is and I can't....lol ;) thank you again for answering silly questions

I got my first egg last week. My girls turned 20-21 weeks last week. I believe it is the GC's who are laying. They are the ones in and out of the nesting boxes and they are the ones hovering over the eggs I have found on the floor. The PBRs don't seem at all interested yet. I am up to about 3 eggs a day so we have a ways to go before they are all laying...regularly.

Golden Comets are hybrids, so it's not unusual for them to start laying first. Hybrids, or any other cross of breeds (mutts) make excellent layers.

I just saw one laying this morning, and sure enough it was a GC.

I am a noob so I'm not sure I have many expectations. I brought this flock home in May and had them all set up in the brooder and only then did it dawn on me that it would be October or later before I saw any real egg production. LOL! I mean I just had never really thought that they would need to grow up some before I'd get eggs. I think that is really funny now in hindsight.

But yeah, whenever they get around to it is fine for me. I'm in no rush. I am looking at starting a new flock of heritage breeds and their maturation cycle is even longer, and I'm ok with that. I like the birds themselves and am enjoying getting to know them. The eggs (and meat) are a nice to have.

Still waiting here also.

I have 4-5 pullets that are so red in the face, you would swear they got sunburned. Those pullets won't squat for me, but are all over Mr Roo, tails to the sky...and squat for him...he's hiding from them, by mid day lol

They are BR's, just a tad over 4 months, and I had one girl, yesterday, that dug a "nest" in their run, and layed in it, almost all day, looking very uncomfortable. They have also been in the nest boxes. Kicked out all the straw, so I put shavings in. The shavings stay in a bit longer than the straw did.

The red faced pullets have been so, for 2-3 weeks now. I usually keep them confined to the coop till about 11:00 am, hoping they will lay in the nest boxes, but had to let them out as the one that was "nesting" yesterday, has become an escape artist the past few mornings, when I go in to do chores. Got her in their run this morning, after chasing her around a bit, so had to let the rest out.

I can't say I am being very patient...trying though...I really need them to start laying, so I can start selling eggs to help pay for their feed! Plus it's so exciting, that first egg!!!

Do you think it will be soon? I have read some, that are showing the signs mine are, still don't lay for a couple more MONTHS

I was really hoping for a couple weeks

I'm working on that one and trying really hard to leave them alone too! ( not check on them every 15 minutes lol )

Oh, I also am switching them over to layer now and they are eating it like there is no tomorrow.
