First Egg Countdown

I'm still patiently waiting for eggs to appear. My pullets are 25 weeks old and every day they get closer to laying, I can actually see them changing daily. It's fascinating. Our cockerel is even getting into the spirit of things, helping them find a place to lay. Lol!

I can only imagine the thrill of finding an egg!

I count myself lucky that our first egg was at 20 weeks and they are 21 weeks now. That is, if the feed store was truthful about them being 2 weeks when we got them. Pretty sure they were right, what breeds do you have?

All of ours are Silver Spangled Hamburgs. I've read that once they start laying, they should be very reliable, but I have no idea when the breed typically starts to lay.

Where is everyone?
New update for me, we got TWO, count 'em, TWO eggs today! Yippee, that means I have 2 girls laying. One was obviously from the first hen, and the new one was much smaller and a different color, so pretty! I am on my way to daily eggs!! So excited!

Yay!!! Congrats on your eggs!
I finally got another egg from FluffyButt this morning. It had been four? days since she had given me one of those pretty little eggs! No thin eggs under the roost today either. Hmmm... could the thin ones under the roost have been from her even though they were much lighter? I guess I'll just have to see what tomorrow brings.

Congrats everyone on their eggs! I was just so thrilled when I started having EXTRA eggs. Filling up that whole egg carton with a dozen freshly laid eggs was sure a pretty sight!

I am anxiously awaiting our first egg. The chickens are 22 weeks old yesterday. I have a silver laced Wyandotte, New Hampshire red, and a barred Plymouth Rock. I witnessed my first mating episode yesterday. Everything I have read says that when a pullet allows mating then she is fertile. Is this accurate and my hen is now fertile and I should see an egg soon? I did notice yesterday (before reading on this) that their combs are a deep red now. Oh and there was no mating dance from the roo...he just ran over and got on her.

Ok, so I have 5 chickens and I think only 4 are laying ( they have been laying for like 2 months now) and today I think my 5th chicken stated laying today! But it didnt lay in the nesting boxes instead it layed on the ground. Now I am going to probably get 6 eggs today, a new record!

It depends on whether he made contact or not. Sometimes young cockerels try to mate, but have to learn their balancing technique first, so they aren't successful at mating. If she submitted without a struggle, then she is ready to mate and also lay eggs. So it should be soon.
