First Egg Countdown

23 weeks and 3 days. We have our very first egg! My Australorp and BSL are the only two that could have done it, but I'm really thinking the honors go to Sissy. My BSL comb is started to pink up and grow. The Austra is a brilliant red and a week ahead in growth. She's also been more vocal the past two days.

looks like my australorps egg! :) congrats.

I will join this thread after reading it all day! I have two buff orp. hens, a white amerucana, and one buf roo. They are 22 weeks from the day we bought them today. We also have a drake and hen muscovy duck that are a week or two younger.

The chickens are all still avoiding Fearless the roo's advances. The ducks are going to town.

I just want some eggs!!!!!! hahahah, the wait is killing me. I went and got myself another hen that is supposed to lay eggs and even she doesn't lay for me either!

here are some pictures of my feather kids.
Pita the drake and his hen Houdini

Fearless, the Buff roo

Nugget, or Bemo (can't tell them apart) Buff hen

This is BBQ, the "white amerucana" ( I can't spell)

Welcome to the thread! My girls are 20 weeks old tomorrow (1st chickens I have ever had) and I have been on the edge of my seat waiting for eggs since they were 17 weeks. I have gotten so used to just hanging out with the chickens - feeding them, holding them, cleaning their coop (but not collecting eggs). I'm starting to forget that they will actually lay eggs someday and I don't think I will even believe it's true when I finally see an actual egg in their nest!

Dang! That's a BIG old egg!

I've given up on my RIR and other Barred Rock.
The two Barred Rocks are exactly the same age.
One has been laying a week now.
The other doesn't show any sign of squatting or egg songing.
Of course, she's more wild and won't let me get close enough to make her squat.
But I'm telling them about "chicken and dumplings" now - hoping to scare them into laying!

I heard the egg song today!!! From my orps I'm sure cuz other are bantams I'm hoping that means I may have some earlier than some heavy breeds! :) first time I heard in along time wasn't sure what it was at first lol...moved cross country started new flock...

I'll join in, I still have two new pullets who look close but are not in lay yet.
I was out working in the run tonight.
My Salmon Faverolles pullet "Pinkie pie" who hatched for the Easter hatch a long, finally squatted for me. I reached to pick up trash, and down she went and her wings came out.
Her comb looks much redder just these past few days. She seemed to be breathing heavy though, which sometimes comes during laying, but I wonder if she was too humid/hot, because our weather had been super chilly but today was a weird very warm day.

Congrats on the eggs and Good luck to all of you waiting with me ;)

Good luck to you too! I have not seen any squatting, but my chickens don't really like me. I have to corner them to get a hold of them, so I haven't been able to get too close to see about squatting, but everyone is getting redder and redder in the face, so hopefully soon!!! I was told we need eggs today by DH so I am holding out... If i have no eggs by next weekend when everyone will be 23 weeks I will go buy some to see if that magic trick works for us! hahahahah

I'll hop on this thread. I have two Wyandottes, two Cochins and one Barred Plymouth Rock. They will be 20 weeks old in two days and I've not yet seen much indication that they're even thinking about laying. Spoiled ungrateful little brats. They passed last nights health check with flying colors, they eat Scratch and Peck layer grains, they have free access to oyster shells, and I add protein treats like mealworms and BOSS to help with their juvenile molt. I even have fake eggs sitting in the nest boxes. If they don't start laying soon, I dunno what I will do, but stew is starting to sound mighty tempting!

I think I read in here somewhere that Wyandottes take longer. Dunno about any of the others. I put golf balls in the nest area and made some nice spots for them and they kicked all the straw out of the box. Not surprising though, considering my chickens don't act anything like chickens are supposed to act. they are all brats.

I'm still waiting on my Easter Hatch pullets too. Only one (a Black Copper Marans) has started laying.

They will lay when their bodies are ready. As soon as you break down and buy eggs, then they will start laying.
