Grats to everyone getting eggs and welcome to everyone new to the thread. Seeing people get their first eggs never gets old!
I agree that EEs are a pretty fun breed for the average backyard flock owner. Sure they can't necessarily be shown, but they have such personality, and those eggs are so fun! My girl is starting to look like a mountain man with her big salt and pepper beard and muff.
btw I might slow down on posting a little in coming weeks due to illness, but I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for all you new egg hopefuls!
Pele - sending well wishes your way also - be well soon
Okay so I got my second egg today. I know it is from a second chicken because it is a different color brown and a different shape. However, It is still not white. My girls that should lay white eggs look more ready than any of the other hens. I just don't get it. Oh well at least the eggs are starting to show up and they are in the nesting boxes.
The first picture is egg #1 and then we have egg #2 and the third pic is the comparison picture. I believe they are from 2 different hens due to the color and shape differences.
Over the past week to 10 days, we have finally gotten some eggs!!!!
We have confirmed, by watching, that one of our Red Sex Link hens, Cinnamon, has been laying. Her eggs have slowly increased in size, and are now up to about 48 grams. Very pretty medium brown color too.
One of our Buff Orpington girls, not sure which one it is at this point, joined Cinnamon in the nesting box and popped an egg out. There was no hanging around, dawdling for her....she just hopped in, popped out the egg, and then headed back out to roam the yard. Silly girl!
Tonight "my" girl, Charli, laid her first egg!! She was the one chick in the group that I personally picked out. She is a Black Cochin Bantam who earned her name since she appears to waddle like Charlie Chaplin. She went through quite a process of getting her nest box ready. She was NOT content to rest in there like the other hens. She did a lot of scratching around. A lot. My dad has put those plastic type mats in the nesting boxes (the name escapes me right now), which is fine for most of the hens. Not Miss Charli!!! We had to add some shredded paper to make her happy. She was just scratching and scratching, trying to make the mat suitable for laying the egg. Didn't work. So we grabbed some shredded paper, put it in the box with her, and let her do what she wanted. She spent some time scratching, but more time was spent moving individual pieces of paper around so it was to her liking. And about 15 minutes later, viola! We had a TINY egg!!!
Charli's first. Just 20 grams.
My dad is keeping a running list of egg sizes and colors, along with hen name if we know who it came from. I am excited to follow Charli's egg laying to see how big (or not-so-big) they will get.
