First Egg Countdown

Yep an egg from my female duck. I also have two golf balls in there too.

I would take it out. It is encouraging them to peck at a real egg if its rotten or cracked or something.

They shouldn't immediately connect a regular egg with a shell-less ones. Chickens have many wonderful qualities, but mental giants they are not.

I keep ping pong balls in the nesting boxes. They pecked them out of curiosity a couple of times, then learned that all round things in the box are obviously boring and unedible.

Gwen- I competent misunderstood you when you said they were pecking the duck egg, I thought you meant like egg eating. NEVERMIND then. Lol. I would keep ony in edible dummy eggs in there, though.

Oh that's ok I understand how you could misunderstand. I think I'm going to try ping pong balls,wooden eggs,rocks....I want them to leave the eggies alone! My ladies have knocked the golf balls out of the nest and that's where I found my 2nd egg. Everything was partically covered because of the deep litter. I'm actually wondering if the 2nd egg was even layed in the nesting area or just dropped where ever. Man I can't wait to get this down! Does anyone know when chickens useually lay? Before sunrise? I know that's when my ducks lay.
