First Egg Countdown

Ok, Chicken Friends, what is the egg squat everyone is talking about? My older hens squat down in submission to me when they'll let me pet them. I doubt we're talking about the same thing???

The great egg squat!!
The squat is when you put your hand on their backs, the bend down a little, and spread their wings slightly. And then... While your hand is still on their back if you rub it a little rough, like a scratch and they raise their butts up a little... That's how you know it's a squat!

My first egg!!

Finally got our first egg, it's kind of small, but I know they will get bigger with time. 29 weeks of waiting has finally paid off!

29 weeks?!? What breed?? Good Lord......I'm not that patient. My brown layers have started, it's my Easter Eggers that need to move it along. :)

I think it was my RIR, she has been hanging out in the nesting box that I found the egg in. I'm still waiting on 5 more to start laying.

hi! i have 1 pullet right now. unfortunately i dont know ANYTHING about where they initially came from, or when they were hatched. i only know where they were purchased :idunno the most guessed age range is about 5-6 months, if anyone else can take a guess it would be GREATLY appreciated! these are the best pics i have of them so far. i was just wondering if anyone else has PRs and about what age did they start laying? i just introduced the nest box yesterday afternoon and have yet to stop and see if she has checked it out.
They look about 12 weeks or so. The feathers around the neck and head usually grow out longer around 16 weeks, and get a little darker with RSLs. This site shows week by week progress pics to compare a golden buff, which will look very similar to your reds. http://futhers.com/raising/growth-record They're pretty birds! Both look very healthy and happy.

Thanks! 12 weeks sounds about right to me, but im no eggspert HeHe :)
Sorry I love corny jokes...

Anyway, I got them the last week in April and they had 4-5 wing feathers by that time. My little roo is starting to get some pretty shiny, dark feathers on his head, neck and wings.

I will try to get some better pics today

My Rooster has always been very friendly, in his 18 1/2 weeks of life, but now the hens have started laying the last 4 days, he keeps "biting" me when I collect the eggs! Hard enough to leave bruises a few times! Its not really a peck, its an open beak & close it around the skin! Grrrrr!

FIRST EGG!!!! Whooooohooo!!! I'm beyond just a little excited, I think my neighbors 3 acres away heard me scream for joy :D

Now if I can just figure out who laid it....
