First Egg Countdown

Every pullet is different in how quickly they make an egg, but generally, it takes 26 hours to make an egg. So they will get later and later in the day, until it's too late, then they will skip a day, then start again the following morning. Then add to it that their bodies have to adjust to this process, so it can be pretty sporadic. I've had layers start and lay a couple of eggs, then nothing for a week or two.

Congrats on having 2 pullets laying!

Welcome!
Thanks! Actually, today I got 6 eggs! These are super layers, 5 hours of daylight! How can I tell which chickens are laying? Is there a different shade of brown for each breed?

Well my hen laid her first seven eggs and decided to sit them 19 or 20 days ago, so now I'm hoping that if/when the 5 fertile eggs under her hatch she will start again tomorrow Is day 18 =) which is the day my bantams almost always hatch. Still waiting onto two Br and one Nhr pullets that hatched in June still think the nhr will be first.

Thanks

The weather is so weird lately I think it changes their minds about laying. This morning it is 22 degrees! This is SC, it's supposed to be warm. LOL One week it's in the 70's the next week the high is 40. No wonder they aren't laying.

Quote: Generally, yes, different breeds have different shades. Hybrids, like sex links can lay a variety of shades, depending on what breeds were used to make them. If you have 2 breeds that lay close in shade, like BR's and Orps, then you just have to catch them on the nest to find out which egg is theirs.

My BSL FINALLY laid her 1st egg!!!!

A little egg, but it's perfect!
Congrats! Is it olive green? It looks green on my screen.

Thanks! No, it is a very light brown almost pinkish color. Somehow my son missed it when he was letting them out this morning lol

My girls are 28 weeks and the first egg finally came!!! This is my first time keeping chickens so I'm so excited!!

From Lulu the Dominique

I caught her squatting a few days ago. She was pacing and fussing loudly this morning. I wasn't sure if she was mad because I had them penned up or if she was looking for a nesting site (they usually free range). She finally went into the coop. I went to check on her and she was on the roost talking up a storm and being fussy. I coaxed her off the roost and she went into the nest box herself and laid her egg. One of the other girls came and checked on her a few times.
Way to go Lulu!
