First Egg Countdown

WOOOOHOOOOO!
First egg!! I think it was probably Lemon as she has been fully squatting more the last few days. She was my less developed "special" chicken who rode the short bus! Always just a few steps behind the other girls. Leticia squats too, but she was a couple days behind Lemon. Snoop's comb grew about a half inch since 2 days ago and is super red, but she doesn't squat yet.

Dottie on the other hand has started pecking on everyone's legs, like an attack chicken. She has the smallest comb and wattles of anyone and still quite pale. Is she mad that she isn't progressing like the others? She gets scolded and swatted every time she pecks but she is persistent and follows waiting for the opportunity. My best friend and #1 babysitter is starting to fear her!

Back to my egg!!

Here it was just waiting for us!

So pretty and really small!!

Broke it into the skillet and WHAT? a double yolker first time out of the gate??

Look at the super dark orange yolk oozing out! Seriously a drop to your knees flavor reminiscent of my childhood raising chickens! What an awesome feeling today! We figured mid-March when we first got our chicks, thinking about 25 weeks. They just turned 20 weeks on Tuesday and we just can't believe we have an egg already!

Hey I have a FluffyButt in my herd too, what breed is yours ?! Oh... and Congrats on the egg!!!!!!!!

Thanks! My FluffyButt is a Cuckoo Marans! She's got a bigger rear going on than our Buff Orphington!!! Don't tell her that, though. I wouldn't want her to get mad and stop laying. ;) She gave us another one today!

Congrats! And a gorgeous yolk color too!

OK, first egg yesterday and we are pretty sure it is our constantly squatting Lemon. Today, no egg..BUT our first egg was a double yolk so whoever it is will need an extra day to get her rhythm in order. It's obvious at this point that no one else is quite ready to start laying.

I have an 18 week old Barred Rock that hasn't laid anything yet. How old was yours when she laid her first egg?

First egg Thursday afternoon. No egg yesterday and no egg today. I was outside for most of the afternoon and both Snoop and Lemon climbed the ramp at least twice each to chatter with the nest boxes and kick some straw around. I kept telling both of them that they could lay an egg for Mama anytime... no such luck. I still don't know who laid the first egg. I hope it wasn't a fluke, I am ready to start getting at least one egg daily!

mscarole, from what I have read mostly on this board is that Barred Rocks are very late bloomers, some not laying for 28+ weeks. I could be wrong, I am certainly no expert in chicken breeds. My girls are Rhode Island Reds and are 20 weeks last Tuesday.

You probably have a couple more weeks to wait. Is your bird from a hatchery? If so, laying could be in the 20-24 week range. If it's a heritage BR, you've got a much longer wait.

I've had experience with just four hens and each of them did the same thing. Laid one egg, waited days, and laid another, waited, laid another. They are just getting used to their new hormones, their bodies need time to adjust to this new process. Within three weeks is laying their first egg, each of mine were laying 5-6 a week consistently. :) don't worry, it'll happen soon!
