First Egg Countdown

We got one!!!!!
Congrats!

I'm a first time chicken owner my hens are about 7 months old when should they start laying anyone know I have araucana/amerucauna
Should be any time now.

Woo, hoo! First egg EVER from our little flock. The only one that even looked close to laying was one of the Barred Rocks, so I'm pretty sure she's the responsible party.

We got her at 1 day old, so she would have hatched May 7, which makes her 20.5 weeks old -- quite the early-maturing girl. In the last days and weeks, she's been making a lot more noise than the others, has very bright red wattles and comb, and has been checking out the nest box. She looks a lot like the picture you posted, Jaxia.

The egg was small and oblong (that store-bought egg in the bottom picture is an Extra Large, btw), and it had a really well-formed hard shell. I even had to crack it a couple of times when I went to open it up. I guess the calcium in that layer feed is doing the job. Here's the result.

Can you tell I am proud of her?
Congrats! Nice yolk color too.

And she gave us #2 today! She's a star! It's funny because, of all our chickens, the Barred Rocks are the smallest, and this one, in particular, is one of the smallest of the BRs. The mysteries of chicken maturity are way beyond me.

chickenman89, I believe the Americaunas are among the slowest to start laying, but 7 months seems a bit much. Or it should be any day. But the pea comb in that picture looks more pinkish than red, though none of mine are laying so I'd also suggest you try another thread. Best of luck. I'm sure it'll all work itself out in time!

Thanks, everyone, for all the encouragement, support, and tips. I'm still in a bit of a state of disbelief, but my little "chicken economics" spreadsheet actually has two ones on it now, rather than all zeroes. (So far, we've gotten .17 of a dozen according to the handy dandy spreadsheet ;-))

O.M.G I heard the egg song very briefly and a few hours later I went in the coop and in one of the laying boxes there were 2 mini eggs! Right beside each other! They are from 2 of my ISA browns! This is the first time I have ever gotten eggs, so 2 in one day! This is awesome! One is perfect, but the other is a little broken because its a soft shell. I'm so happy that they laid in the boxes! I'm excited to collect some more tomorrow! BTW I don't know who laid them but I have a few that have been squatting for a while and been very vocal. They are 17 weeks old.
