I have been reading this thread with much interest and anticipation of my first egg. My girls will be 17 weeks old this coming weekend. Yesterday, I heard the egg song! I was sitting outside visiting with some of the free range chickens, when I heard a commotion from inside of the coop. At first, I ignored it, thinking that they were jostling for position or something but this kept going on and on. Then it hit me!
It was the egg song!
I went running in to see who it was, but of course, they all (there were 5 in there) stared at me with blank expressions. I looked for an egg, but couldn't find one.
Last night I was reading here on BYC and someone said that chickens will "practice" their song. Come on! Quit practicing and start laying!
You "First Eggers" are having so much fun, and I'm so jealous! But I did notice today that Pearl's comb is beginning to turn, so there's light at the end of the tunnel, even if the tunnel is REALLY long.

Awwww, you'll get there. They seem to grow up so fast, but it takes forever for the egg to show up! I still get excited about seeing first eggs, collecting my eggs, etc. I never get tired of it.
Let's see, my bantam girls were hatched on 2/9....I know they are on the verge of laying, if the red combs and squatting are any indication. Still waiting....maybe I should threaten them for the pot, but they know I'm lying. The bad thing is, I got rid of a golf ball that my kids were throwing around the house....I should've put it in the nest box for a hint!
