Agreed, that's a tough wait.

Try waiting for a broody to hatch chicks, then wonder which are girls and which are boys. 2 more weeks til baby chicks!

And mama hen takes care of them!

Welcome to Mrsfig! If you have production reds, then 14 weeks is normal. Some breeds have been so refined for egg production by hatcheries that they lay early, and lay A LOT. My Red Sex Links are exactly the same way!

Grats to Chickenlickin8, sgoff, and mrsfig !!!!!!

Happychooks, those girls are beautiful! I'd be really excited to see your show quality Rock grow! I think you got a great deal if you were able to get rid of that many roosters. I was almost ready to pay people to take mine!

Thanks breezychick! I think it suites her rather well. Now I just have to convince my DH that it's a better name for her. She's his favorite, so he'll probably be unamused

I have some pullets that we got on April Fools Day

And I can't wait till the first egg! Their faces, combs, and waddles are getting bigger and redder so hopefully sometime soon! There are 2 Golden Comets, 1 Red Star, 2 Rhode Island Reds, and 1 Barred Rock!

You're within two weeks! I've found that they squat within two, then start being LOUD within one week. If she's pacing in and out of the box, it's just a matter of days.

Hope that helps!

ok! The neighborhood cats and that dang stellar jay are gonna get it! The chickens don't like the cats and are deathly afraid of the stellar jay and everytime the chickens see them they start balking like crazy making me jump up thinking, EGG SONG!

My 3 Buff Orps are 19 weeks... One is super red comb / big wattles for 2 weeks. The 2nd has had big red comb / medium wattles for 1 week. The last is just starting to develop the comb / wattles this week.

I've noticed an increase in "talking" volume with my normally silent chickies. No squatting yet though. Sigh. The development of the first hen made me hope, but there are still no eggs.

Does it still count as a 'first egg' if yesterday we only got one egg and today we got.....count em....2 eggs!!??!!

I've suspected someone else has laid an egg before but since we only get one egg for the day how could I tell? I actually think all 3 are laying but I've only caught 2 of them actually on a nest. One of our Buff Orps is pretty consistent these day giving us 3-4 a week. She parks herself on the nest for 2-3 hours...actually acts like a broody. Eeek, is that even possible at her young age?

As a side I think the girls are setting me up to get a laugh. Someone gets to bawk bawking as in come and look at the beauty I just laid. I go rushing out there. They rush the gate, looking for treats and slowly retreat, chortling to themselves. I think they are saying "hah! made you look!" There is never ever an egg after all the commotion. I usually just stumble on to it one of the 50 billion times I check the nest a day.
