First Egg Countdown

Pics
They'll get bigger.

After three weeks of laying, mine are still laying the small eggs.

They just haven't gotten the memo that size DOES matter.

Our first egg, laid by Opal the EE. She is two days shy of 20 weeks. She started squatting just a few days ago and yesterday I saw her going in and out of the nest box a few times. Yesterday I also gave them tuna and bought some crickets at the pet store for them. Must have done the trick! My money was on the BO who has been squatting for a week now, but no dice. This afternoon I also heard the SS sing the egg song, but I think it was because there was a cat under the porch.

Anyone ever get a picture of the squat? I just tried for an hour. Ain't happenin'. The "best" one just looked like a 4yr old hitting a hen. I'll try in the morning when she seems to stay squatted longer.

Yippee!

One of my Australorps laid the first egg today! They are 22.5 weeks old. I bought them from Cackle Hatchery as an Urban Farmer five pack.

The egg on the right is the pullet egg:

This is Sienna, She probably laid the egg:

Now I will be waiting for my Hatchery RIR chickens to start laying. They are 16.5 weeks old.

Congrats to everyone who got their first egg today. My 7 pullets are approaching their 23-week mark - and still no eggs. My son teases me that they're all really roosters.

Don't have a picture but you will KNOW it is the egg squat. I tried getting them to do the infamous egg squat before they actually did it but the first time they did, I knew it was the egg squat. They go down a little, both legs bent like yours would if you were doing a squat, and their wings go out to their sides (slightly) and are quite stiff, like the chicken is trying to balance very hard on a tightrope. Then if you try rubbing or scratching on their back close to their tail, their butt/tail will go up a little. Maybe I'll try to document a picture because every time I reach for my two layers now, they squat!

Just a little longer!! Don't think about - don't even check the nest boxes anymore - and then BAM! You'll have your egg. At least that's what happened to me
