First Egg Countdown

I'm just relieved to know that it's really not that uncommon to have some of them hold out as long as they possibly can before they start laying. At first, when they were laying outside under bushes and other stuff I started to think 1) they have a really good hiding spot that I can't find or 2) something is snatching the eggs before I am. Well, then it started raining and we gave them a new style of nesting box (the 3rd design we tried) and *hello* we got eggs....inside....in the nesting boxes!!! Woot woot!!!!! Now just waiting patiently for 4-5 eggs a day, even if it's not that many every day, just to let us know that they are all in fact laying!!

I can definately understand about the egg slow down now. I have 5 hens laying out of seven. My two bared rocks still arent laying. They are the youngest at 6 months. I guess that would make them 26 weeks. My other 5 had started laying nicely until this fall. I am lucky to get one a day now. The latest to lay is my leghorn. She layed her second egg Sunday, 47.6 grams. Yes I am pathetic, I weigh them. WOW she is a tall bird. She is a good 6 inches taller than the rest of my flock. The latest addition to my flock is a Buff Orpington rooster. Cute little guy. He is only 3 months. The girls didnt take kindly to his sudden arrival. I had to separate him in the coop for a few days. Now they seem to get along. I just set up a temporary run in the run. Also an old upper kitchen cabinet for the little guy to roost in. Quick easy and safe for him, yet they could all see each other. It made the transition much more bearable for him as well as me. Those hens were just plain mean to him, They even drew blood. I suspect that he will get his revenge in a few months.

That's such a bummer about the slow down in egg production!! Hopefully it'll pick back up for everyone here soon!

Congrats on the new little guy. Hopefully your girls warm up to him soon. I have heard that roo's have it rough until they hit puberty if they are younger then the adult girls. It's nice that you've made some adjustments just for him. Maybe it'll make it easier for him to tough it out until he doesn't have to anymore.

Man I have not been on here in a bit, Congrats to all the first eggs.
My first egg cam on the 15th of oct and yesterday I collected eggs #8 and 9,, go girls go

Here are Zoe's third, fourth and fifth eggs. The fifth was laid just moments ago.

Go Zoe! Now get out there and convince the others it's something they want to do!
I love the stamp with her name on it. I could never find ones like that for mine because I dont name them people names,, darn it..

wow I need the details on that, I love the idea.

I am a graphic artist, so I have all of the design creation tools already, and it was just a matter of sitting down and spending the time on it. I made these using Adobe Illustrator. So, the stamps for Zoe, Nandi and Inara aren't fonts so much as they were hand designed (by me) lettering. But the other ones are fonts, that I tweaked all of the kerning leading, heights, weights and whatnots on to get them to fit on a 1/2" self-inking rubber inspection stamp.

There are a ton of custom rubber stamp companies out there if you look online. I found one offering these on sale for less than $10 each (I think they were $8 each), but then in my excitement, I kinda screwed the pooch when I went to order them, because I ended up getting them off of another site which was offering them for $20 each. Oooh, I wanted to just kick myself.

So, I spent a good penny on them out of my discretionary spending allowance, but I am still happy with how they turned out and am not overly upset with myself for missing out on the better deal.
