Hi all! I got my first chickens ever in February. They are about 15.5 weeks old and I am eagerly waiting for my first egg! I have them on layer feed now, I have a few nesting boxes set up, I have witnessed mating from the roosters, and I've heard the egg song. So here's what I've got:

3 EE
4 SLW
4 BO
2 SS
1 RSL
2 Red Rangers

I also have a handful of 13 week old white leghorns and a half dozen mallard ducks that will lay. Can't wait!

Who wants to join me?

Nope. I just lost a bunch to a predator attack the other day. :(

They are 17.5 and 15 weeks old. I'm still waiting though some are getting nice and red in the face.

I'm sorry to hear about your losses

I am also on egg watch. I have a mixed flock that are around 16 weeks and I have 2 girls that look close. A golden SL and an Austra White. Can't wait to share our first egg.

That's awesome! My golden/red sex link was among my victimized chickens. :( I still have 2 EE, 4 BO, 4 SLW, 1 SS, and I actually have 3 red rangers. I have 3-4 leghorns and only 1 duck. I am still pretty excited about my first egg. I'll be buying chicks soon to replace my losses.

I to am on watch. I have one Plymouth Rock, a Golden Sex link, and a Buff Orpington. All of which I got in march. The rock in the beginning of the month the other 2 towards the end. I'm a newbie so I'm not really sure what I'm looking for. I have nesting boxs but my Rock sits under a bush and sings the sweetest song. With my luck I'll be crawling under there everyday searching for my breakfast.

After writing my last entry, I went outside to count heads and put everyone to bed. While performing my nightly ritual, I spied a red ranger pullet rolling a little brown egg across the bottom shelf of the old workbench where they roost. She was pushing it towards me as if to say "Look what I did mom!"

What do you mean by " nice and red in the face?" We too got our first chickens in Feb! We are up to ten on any given day. Yesterday four eggs. Weird. Also never witnessed mating but we had a chixk hatch this past weekend!!! Also sorry foe your loss. We have lost twwlve birds since Feb all but two to predators.

Nice and red in the face means the pullet's face, comb and wattles turn from pale pinky-red to really bright red. Indicates the pullet will lay very soon.
