First Egg Countdown!!

I'm so excited!

As a new chicken own we, I had only read about the squatting behavior.....now I've witnessed it myself! 3 of my six 19 week old RLS's squatted for me this weekend. it's a really interesting thing to see...especially when they stomp their feet. Kind of pitiful that they're so submissive though.

Can't wait for my first egg!!!!!!

I have good news! I successfully stalked my girls this weekend so I know who is laying. The eggs are still very small but we were able to make a batch of cookies and scrambled eggs. Woo Hoo. Just need the other 5 girls to start laying but this has been a lot of fun!

Congrats to everyone who got their first eggs!

I have enjoyed everyone's posts about the first eggs and progress! I still get eggcited when I get eggs! I have the following laying and just waiting for my Golden Laced Wyandotte to start. She is super red and grouchy so I am guessing soon.

  • Gold Sex Link-medium brown egg
  • Black Sex Link-light brown egg
  • Jersey Giants-one laying a light brown egg and the other a dark brown egg, both very tiny for such big girls!
  • Speckled Sussex-light brown egg, almost cream in color
  • Buff Orp-light brown egg, nice size and a couple double yolkers
  • Easter Egger-small green eggs.
  • Austra White-beautiful white eggs, nice shape and size.

congrats once again to everyone who got their first eggs and I love all of the updates.

Thanks for posting who is giving you what.....do you remember who started when?

Alaskan-We were gone for a week at the end of July so some of my data are estimates. And yes, my family thinks I am crazy for keeping a spreadsheet. I also have an app on my phone that I record egg laying data and track everything. I am clearly well on my way to being a crazy chicken lady.

I think you are a careful and well organised lady!

But, WOWSERS! You had a Jersy Giant lay before your supposedly super good egg laying hybrids!

I like data like that, fascinating! I never thought of Jersey Giants as super good egg layers, but then the other one didn't start laying until 22 weeks.

I got one double yolker last week, and no more since!

Ok, crazy chicken lady, :D. I was so impressed with your organisation, I wanted to see what app you use......

I can't find a chicken /egg tracker under apps....what do you use?

Help me join you in your, uh...... well organised record keeping! ;)

I use the Southern States app called Poultry Pal. It has an egg tracker feature that I found very helpful. :)

I know I was surprised by that as well. I didn't suspect her to be our first because I thought JG's were slow to mature (generally speaking). I am 100% sure it was her because it was a Sunday and we were able to watch the process and it was our first egg. They both lay very small eggs and they are VERY big girls and so fluffy.

Mabel the JG who laid the first egg.

I have 8 RIR and one of my girls just started laying last week she layed 6 days in a row then layed an egg with no shell. She scared my husband he thought something might be wrong with her but I told him it could happen the next day nothing then Monday she layed a normal egg. But now I think another one of my girls is about to lay her first egg. She's been in the nesting box for about an hour now. We are super excited as these are our first chickens ever! Very healthy/happy girls!
