My young Mille Fleure Cochin Bantam hen laid her first egg. It was about a third of the size of the eggs of my other girls, but a lovely tan color with a nice dark yolk. The next day I found her stone cold dead in the coop. Does anyone think the second egg may have been regular size and bound her. Or was this just a freak thing? She was a healthy little bird. :(

So sorry for your loss...

Can't really say. Over the last 20 years I have lost most of my chickens either when they start to lay or when the start again after molting. It is just a fact that sometimes they are not right for egg laying! That said I have only ever lost a handful of chickens over 20 years of keeping them.
