First Egg, Double Yoke, Then soft shell

I had my first egg Tuesday it was a big double yoke. Again Wednesday big double yoke. Then today I had a small single yoke and with it from another hen a small soft shell busted egg. They are 19 weeks old. The double yokes were very strong shells. I have oyster shell out for them. Feeding Dumor layer feed. Thinking of switching to Purina with oyster shell already added. Any suggestions

How do you know it's from the other hen?

What breed are they? Do they have a rooster?

This is normal with first time layers. The eggs will settle themselves out.

No rooster. I don’t know it’s from another hen I just assumed one chicken wouldn’t lay two eggs since I checked nest boxes yesterday. They are Red Stars, Black Stars, and Buff Orphingtons. I don’t know which one is actually the one laying because they do it while I’m at work

I personally prefer the Purina over Dumor...

BUT, I agree completely that this is simply a hiccup of the gals getting their complicated laying system up and going. It is still working out kinks.

Soft shells in new layers is NOT about oyster shell... as hens will sacrifice their own calcium to lay solid shells.

Most "layer feed does have the oyster shell already added. That is what makes it "layer"... around 4% calcium.

I use the flock raiser and OS on the side free choice.

At the age you state... no need to worry, this is par for the course... assuming you aren't feeding excess treats. No more than 10% of their total daily intake.

2x EggSighted4Life Not a fan of Dumor at all (black, stinky, mushy poop) Purina Flock Raiser is what I feed, Oyster Shells in a separate dish. haven't had issues with shells nor egg laying. No more stage feeding and storing different feeds.
