I know people are trying to look out for the 'breed standards' but you made it plain that you know hatchery stock isn't gonna be at that level, your first eggs are true cause for celebration

and I think it's wonderful! I'd be very happy if I had any so nice to add to my mixed basket of eggs. It's a beautiful egg!

I'm waiting on tenterhooks to see what color eggs my 3 hatchery EE pullets lay. Of the two I have from the same hatchery (Mt Healthy), one lays a very pale barely-bluish egg, and the other lays a very pale peachy tan egg. Of COURSE I know they aren't perfect Aracaunas, they're EEs, but I still like 'em @!$%#!

That is true!

A true Welsummer would not have that color of egg which it is way too light and not in correct terra cotta hue. But the speckles are something else, isn't it? As long the OP is happy with the egg color they got, then I dont have a problem with it. Like Tailfeathers said, just dont breed them otherwise your buyers will be upset that their eggs or hens didn't come out like it did.

That egg would be a very nice addition to some EE's eggs!

Someone had posted a picture of their welsummer eggs on here that were from Meyers Hatchery and they were really nice. They looked liked a 7 on the color chart.

I think it was posted on the Maran egg link.

I thought I'd quote the above as evidence that beauty certainly is in the eye of the beholder and that there are different strokes for different folks.

I recently had a family come by to buy some birds from me and I was showing them the difference between the eggs my SQ Welsummers lay and those that I am culling (which they wanted). The cool thing was they actually liked the speckled eggs better than what I'm working on. You can see pics of my Wellie eggs on my website.

Jossanne, just FYI and nothing else, even though that Wellie egg is darker than your other brown eggs, for a Wellie, it is still very light. If you do a search on BYC, you can probably come across pictures of other speckled Wellie eggs and see what I mean. Just as a suggestion, if you plan to breed your Wellies, I would not carry on those genes.

God Bless,

Thank you for that info. If you can't tell by reading through this, I understood that point well before I posted the pic of this egg. Everyone has been making it abundantly clear in half the replies to my picture.

I have tried to make it abundantly clear that even though it's not the same color as "show quality" wellie eggs, I'm thrilled with it, because it's at least as good as I was expecting. I know it's a hatchery welsummer. I'm well aware of that. I was aware of that before I bought them.

I am not planning on breeding the wellies. I don't even have a wellie rooster. I got them for pretty brown eggs to add to the cartons of other brown, green and white eggs that I sell.

Can't everyone just understand that and quit raining on my parade???

Hopefully other hatchery wellie owners will see this, and have hope for pretty eggs from their girls too...

Its a beautiful eggs don't worry about it I loved my Hatchery Cuckoo Marans so much and they layed "poor color eggs" I actually thought they were prettier then any other cuckoo marans egg I have ever seen.

Good luck I love my breeder quality wellies no experiance with hatchery girls but good luck any way.

Henry

Well, I think your egg is beautiful. I love the speckles.

I understand keeping to breed specifics for breeders, but since you aren't breeding and thus, not representing a particular standard to sell to other people, I don't see an issue. As long as you are happy, that's all that matters.
