First egg....small????

Still waiting on others to start

So, it's been like 1 & 1/2 weeks and she hasn't laid any more eggs? Or is she the only one that is now laying? ...I hope we don't have to wait that long for another egg! I feel so impatient... ;-)

I just picked up 5 chickens 9 days ago that I was told would start to lay soon. The first night I got a large egg!!! So exciting! Haven't had another one since. Then a few days after another chicken laid a small egg and again....nothing else. Will it pick up soon...they are like one egg wonders.

I have a 18wk red star...she layed her first egg yesterday. But today she is acting so weird, which she did yesterday as well. For a few hours now she has been walking around acting strange. She is making loud noises and keeps going in to the nesting box and back out. Could there be something wrong. I am new at this. Just want to make sure that this is normal, and there is nothing wrong with her?? This is a few pictures of her first egg, and us comparing the size of store bought eggs.I want to say thank you to anyone that can help!!

Some hens do act strange before the POL (point of lay) some will keep on getting in and out of the coop, going up and down of the nests, singing their sing song sounds, or keep pacing back & forth some will even be mean temporarily as the case with my RIRs and leghorns then turned nice again after laying awhile. As if their hormones surges and they don't know what to do with it.

What is the best thing to put in nesting boxes?? Straw, hay, or shaving?? Thanks!!

Depends on your preference, I used shavings on top of stapled fake grass. I refresh/top them every few days Straw sometimes can be loaded with mites so I kind of avoid it, better safe than sorry.

I use straw in nests and floor of coop. Haven't had a problem with mites. A coworker lost his small flock to moldy hay. I use to use pine shavings, but two of my five girls were habitual eaters of the shavings, and that can't be good. GC
