First Egg

Completely with you! I found our first egg on the first day of school and could barely contain myself till the kids got home. About a week later now and we're getting 2 eggs a day and anxiously awaiting for the other 3 hens to lay!

lol same with us! 2 eggs a day and just waiting for the rest to start. We were floored on Monday when we got 3. We've got many more to go and tapping out toes for when we go out and see more than 5 (mind you we have 15 laying age)

I have a flock of 7 birds that we got in April from the hardware and ranch supply store. The first to lay was my red sex-linked. She started laying smaller eggs than ones you'd buy at the store or at any stand for that matter. She was about 16 weeks old when she started laying her eggs, but it has been several weeks since she started laying and they are a little bigger and the other day she laid one that looked like a regular large brown egg. So they will get bigger as they continue to lay, but don't be surprised to find a tiny tiny egg in there one day. Ours laid what is called a fairy egg when we left for a wedding. My husband said it had a tiny little yolk, like the size of an eraser.

This is just what we have received from our red sex-linked over the last week or two. This morning my husband surprised me in bed with a white egg, we aren't sure who laid that one but my money is on our Ancona who was super broody yesterday. She kept making some awful noises and was pacing the yard and would run in and the coop, act like she was nesting then she'd run out of the coop all aggravated and upset. She's a little younger than the red, by three weeks or so, my guess is she's about 16 or 17 weeks old. I'm just surprised she laid before our Wyandott who is showing signs that she is getting close to laying. Thry are about the same age as the red, so they are a little older than the Ancona, probably getting close to 20 weeks now, so hopefully one of the Wyandots will start acting broody soon.

Oh yeah and we just picked up two new birds, a 6 month old Welsummer and a 5 month old Cochin. The lady we picked them up from said the Welsummer SHOULD be laying but of course the stress of transport might have halted the egg production a little bit, but I can't wait for those darker brown eggs. We wanted to pick up another one of her birds, because she has some marans and some white ameraucanas that were beautiful.

I have 5 golden comets 23 weeks today. Today I got two 55 grams, two 58 grams and a 63 grams.
They started laying between 17 1/2 to 19 weeks. The first eggs were 42,43 grams. I have also gotten 3 Jumbo eggs so far. Here's a picture of my biggest at 84 grams next to a 43 grams. GC
