Our 18 week Barred Rock laid her first egg today. She was the first to get vocal and started the squat about two weeks ago. Today, she was in the coop going cluck cluck cluck bok BOK cluck cluck...actually sounded like a chicken instead of her usual random screeching.
The thing I didn’t think about before getting chickens is that it could be painful for them. I mean, it didn’t sound like it was pleasant. The egg was on the small side (by design I’m sure), and her vent looks fine - no blood or anything on the egg or her vent area. I guess it gets easier the more they lay? I hope so...that was a solid 30 minutes of bok-BOKing.
