FIRST EGG!!!

Yes they truly are a beautiful breed, especially the coloring on the males. The Standard recommends to track the first 20-30 eggs and this will give their average color they will lay at their peak. I typically see their darkest within the first week to 10 days with mine.

This is the color shade chart I mentioned above. View attachment 4185066

Agajn, congrats on your first egg, it's a gorgeous shade.
Thank you for the chart! I had no idea there was such science involved with the Marans! I will definitely keep track and use the chart as well!

Is the depth of the color determined by their nutrients and/or diet? I'm going to share the chart with my neighbor, she has 18 of various breeds, including some BCM.

I'm not all science-y with the diet aspect. I'm sure it does play a slight role as it's part of their production and food/calcium is involved.

Mostly genetics are involved. The Rooster plays an important role here. If he carries the dark egg gene, he will more than likely darken his daughters future eggs.

We have a great thread here full of info and helpful advise on everything Marans related...
