I have two RIR's that should be laying any day now. They are at 20 weeks.

I do have a Redstar hen that's two years old and lays about an egg a day. She lays like clock work between 11am and 1pm daily. However she did not lay yesterday.

I just got home from work and didn't see any new egg in the nesting box. I went into the coop to search for eggs and I found one in the corner on the ground. Its normal sized and still warm (5:45pm) The unusual thing about this egg is that it has stuff on it like powder?

So my question is, did my Redstar lay on the ground today (first time ever) or did one of my RIR's lay their first egg today?

Also the egg is about the same color as the rest of the Redstar Eggs, are RIR eggs darker?

My RIR eggs vary in color, some are light, almost pink, and others are more of a brown. They are production reds though, I suppose.
Have you gotten any more eggs? Mine were pretty much 6 months before they started laying.
Right now I only have my two older RIRs, sold the other 4. These two are 7 years old, and only one of them is laying. I have an EE that is also 7 years, and laying, then my silkie.
I recently got more EE chicks, so in about 5 more months, I should be getting more eggs again!

I'm so confused

On 6/30 I got another egg but its wierd shape, like a tear drop with a slightly flattened side to it. It was laid in the nesting box.

7/1 I go nothing.

Today 7/2 I got home to two eggs in one nesting box, they are perfect.

All the above mentioned eggs are the same color and size, this makes me believe that they all came from the Redstar and she is just being wierd and laying wierd eggs. However can a hen lay two eggs in the same day? I know there were no eggs at 8am when I went to work. Is it possible that she laid on first thing this morning and one this afternoon? Both were cold at 5:30pm.

Thoughts???

My guess would be that your Red Star is doing what she always does, and a RIR is getting cranked up and beginning to lay. Often, first eggs are a bit off, one way or another. Egg color in the end is individual -- RIR will lay brown eggs, yes, but to say they will be darker or lighter than the Red star's isn't really predictable. Just depends what genes went into her makeup, and no way to know this.

Highly unlikely, if they are both normal looking eggs. The cycle is something like 26 or 28 hours. Of course, it could happen if some are softshell or whatever. I have read on here of 4 softshell eggs in a day. Not predictable if the machinery is goofed up.

Silly chickens. Sometimes my hens will skip a day or two. I don't know how, but I've read you can put food coloring on the vent to see which one is laying.
