First ever hatch... Can't wait.

I hope you don't mind if I join in. I just set 13 eggs in my new Hovabator tonight from my own hens. It's my first ever hatch and the kids and I are pretty excited. If these guys hatch well, they'll go to my friend down the street. I have some BCMs and Wheaten ameraucana chicks coming in another month or so.

The chicks in this hatch will be crosses between an Easter egger rooster and a production red, barred rock, and black ameraucana hen.

Wow... So good to see everyone chatting! 3 days in now... So excited . Around us we have a lot of markets and yesterday I acquired 5 week old ducklings. Hubby built another brooder And they are now settled so I will hopefully soon be able to hatch some baby ducks as well!!

Congrats on those ducklings! So cute! I had to throw out a batch of eggs under a broody yesterday. My hen decided to sit in a weird place and I think that they cool off and never get enough proper heat distribution. Not a single one of them developed. She keeps trying to sit on the top of a wire breeding pen. I'm not sure how she manages to get up there, but her eggs never ever hatch up there. One time I slid a piece of cardboard under her and she hatched a little clutch up there but I decided this time she has sat long enough and just needs to be done. In the meantime I'm seriously thinking about buying some baby brahmas.

We had some guests from Singapore for dinner tonight and the kids mentioned that we had eggs in the incubator. They looked at me like I'd sprouted an extra head and asked why we didn't let the hen hatch them. LOL I told them that I'd done that last year but this year my hen wasn't in the mood for motherhood, thus the incubator. I guess that's an unheard of thing over in that part of the world.

Hehe that is too funny! What a cute story. Thank you for sharing that one. Incubators can be better than henobators, especially when the henobators are indecisive and keep switching nests.

Here are the photos( hope they work)!!

I can't really tell you how he did it.. He just came home one night and built the first one then made the second one for the ducks one afternoon.

It is basically wooden frame with a wire base but they are about 18 inches off the floor so I can get in and clean them. The wire base has 2 bits to it. To add stability to it he got a thicker wire and then covered it with square chicken wire... This just means that it won't bend when they walk on it. He then screwed hardboard to the outside but put it shiny side in so that it can be wiped off. For the lid he built the dram and then screwed it on.... This means that he could put a lid on it so I can lean in to feed. This was then covered in wire again. He has also cut a hole in the top and re fastened it on so that it had a removable bit in so the light could sit in the brooder when the chicks are still young.

I LOVE the brooder! I want one too! We aren't fancy here... I keep my babies inside my house in a tub with a heat lamp. That way I can harass them all day long without the "big girls" getting too jealous.
