First hatch - varied Breeds!

When Candling on Day 3 I didn't see distinct air Cells, so i was worried enough to wake at 5 AM to unplug the turner...which ran about 9 hours. I let them rest overnight, with only slight tipping every fw hours, Then this morning turned large end up, so air cells can develop in the lowered humidity a few more days, with only tilting instead of running the turner. Reassured from another post that since fresh, most may still be viable. I just hope the turner roll bars were not too rough on them day 1-3. I'm on my way now to remove the turner bars, so eggs are not too near the heat. Even with fan always on that seems like a risk. At the bottom of this Post is a Link to a summary on caring for Shipped eggs.

My Purebreed Breeder/shipper from cold country - in January -included instructions to rest them indoors 24 hrs, then keep eggs upright in the Incubator the first 3 days...undisturbed by turning.

That was all new to me, since most general information but i saw a loose air cell in one, so i kept searching for info. Instinct told me to unplug the turner within 8 hours, as it may be too much action since the air cells weren't visible yet. They rested still on their sides for a day, with only slight tilting, and i began a drawdown in humidity, as one of the Breeders of a critically endangered breed recommends lower humidity til hatch. I will try to learn if other breeds also need lower temps or humidity to set up an alternate hatcher by day 17. I'll post my process and results on this thread. Cheers!

In case someone else with Shipped eggs
needs help to think thru their care,
here is an informal summary I found: https://www.facebook.com/notes/alab...ssfully-hatch-shipped-eggs/133243453534988/vv

Markings on the Eggs prior to Shipping were a bit of a mystery - I will post a list of many of their markings...in case it helps someone else ordering from that source...and later add pics as I try to identify Hatchlings. Markings are very different from Meyer Hatchery - who Shipped my first batch of Chicks last May. I added Bold where it seems clear we have 1-3 now in the 'bator...from 1 order of 12!

Ayam Cemani - straight slash (Looks Like an "I"), AC, ACR. Depending on pen
Marans, Mixed Colors - dark egg a slash mark
Blue Marans Pen - Dark egg with M
B - Black copper Marans
Crested Cream Legbar
- unmarked blue to blue green egg or CCL or CL
Golden Spitzhauben - GS
Silver Spitzhauben - SS
Deathlayers - DL GL Silver/Gold
Silver Laced Orpington - SL or SLO
Swedish Flower Hens - F
Seramas - S, small egg
Silver Double Laced Barnevelders - SB
Barbezieux - BZ
55 Flower Hens - 5
Pavlovskaya - PV PV2
Isbars - IS
Basque Hens- BA

Liege Fighters - LF
Quail Brabanconne - br
Olandsk Dwarf - O
Blue Laced Red Wayandotte - W
Mozaics M (green/blue egg)

K - Ketawa

Cindy doesn't have crossbreeds except color pen Marans and Mozaics. Heritage RiR Roos x Cream Legbar/Isbar help her respond to Olive Egg requests.

Note the Egg color to verify that your guess on Breed is correct...then get Expert input. You can always ASK, as I did, about on what the letters on the Eggs refer to! I asked for some Olive and Green Eggers - but almost all mine are Purebred - so Letters should match a usual egg color...as to both parent genetics.

Seeing that FoxfirefarmsLLC main source was the meticulous Greenfire Farm lines of purebreed Chickens - which they adapted to cold country - in N. Idaho - I looked closer. Spirit Lake is east of Spokane WA - alpine country with a lot of lakes and rivers. I was interested. I drove thru there many times, often stopping - or opening a window to breathe the cool alpine air - to holler Yeeee-Haw! Our yard is in an urban rainforest - and I hope any Chicks I get have that same zest for the outdoors. Shipping appeared to be included - so I quickly sent in an Order.

Anyway, Cindy invited a Wish List when I ordered the January Potluck of 12. I asked for Cold Hardy breeds - who lay Blues, Greens, Cream, chocolate and Olive Eggs, to round out our Meyer Brown Layer assortment. Chicken Math to explain to your Partner - our Chicks face their first molt next fall - and we want fresh eggs to keep coming! We have a large double corner lot - without the same limits others have in the City. Extras June-Fall can be Gifted baked, preserved as snacks or Sold. I barter a lot for garden stuff too. Dale and a friend have been building a new pallet fence - and he proposed a separate area for the new ones fairly quickly. His grand-daughter is already helping with the eggs and has great naming ideas. A speckled one will probably be Bobo. We are off to the races - but lots to learn! I love science tho - so still searching and may summarize what i find in an Article. Any tips and info on improving hatchability of Shipped Eggs is appreciated!

Here are snippets from email/texts to show her quick response even while hands full on the farm...

If they were purchased off my web site, they will go next week, you will have tracking later today. I am cleaning up all orders there and closing ebay sales. If its off ebay they go today. -- I will double check your name/order later today. Now would be a good time to get me any wish list. Cindy 208-xxx-xxxx

I do have what will hatch f1 olive Eggers from heritage RIR x Crested legbar and isbar roos. Isbars are laying great and ill look for anything laced! --->per my early Wish List - Julie)

(Note: i also asked about ways to reduce chill risk - she sent 6 extra eggs - and instructions on rest, position, rope between eggs at Lockdown to safeguard against rolling around as other hatchlings get spunky - a picture will be added to illustrate that - along with Breed notations)

Julie said: We already have Brown layers - and hope for Cold Hardy Chicks...and willing to WAIT for big blue, green and Olive/speckled egg layer odds to improve!
Responding to some questions/my Wish List -
  • Basque are far superior (than Nieders) for blondes. Gold laced fertility - (not the best) Barbies and blue laced red wayandottes and the silver laced orps hatching great. I'll fix you up! Cindy

Thoughts -

So many reported total losses from Shipped eggs, i was starting to worry. I'll try to gather some info for the next Beginner.

For general info, I read thru the following links - snipped from another thread - and many other sourced, but few reported improving experience with hatches from Shipped eggs:

_ There are quite a few documents that are excellent for first timers. I highly recommend them.

With shipped eggs it's all about the trip they've had to you as to how many will hatch. I've bought eggs from the same breeder twice on separate occasions and had them shipped to me. The first time only 3 out of 8 eggs hatched and in the incubator I also had eggs we'd picked up of which 11 out of 12 hatched. The next time I got 10 eggs shipped to me and 9 hatched. It all comes down to how much they have been banged about on their trip to you.

I always lie mine down right from the start of incubation and hand turn them. Turning eggs from day zero is vitally important and this article explains the reasons well:
The biology behind egg turning | The Poultry Site

OK - I remove 1 with no growth and one with distinct blood ring a few days ago. Happy with air cells in the rest. As to Breeds in the 'bator - now at day 13 - i think we could be watching for several of these around Ground Hogs Day:

Blue Marans - Dark egg with M
B - Black copper Marans
Crested Cream Legbar - blue to blue green egg - CL
Golden Spitzhauben - GS
Silver Spitzhauben - SS
Deathlayers - DL GL Silver/Gold
Silver Laced Orpington - SL or SLO
Silver Double Laced Barnevelder - SB
Isbars - IS
Basque Hens- BA (2 cream eggs)
LACED ORPINGTNS ? - O - on 2 brown eggs
Blue Laced Red Wayandotte - W
Mozaics M (green/blue egg)

How exciting! So it will now be a bit more than one week till your chicks will hatch! I'm following :fl
I'm planning to incubate shipped eggs. They will have to cross a border between two countries and I hope this will not cause extra problems (eggs having to wait long somewhere, beeing tossed around more etc.). It will be the first time for me hatching eggs and I'm looking forward to it.

Removed the 3d egg tonight - at Day 17 Candling. 3 or 4 seem under-developed - but we left them in anyway. So if those don't make it, we still could get Purebred and OE babies from the other 12...what I ordered before the extras were added. Very hard to see movement or veining as shells have layers of color...but air cells look good. A couple seemed large so I've begun raising humidity a day before usual lockdown. Nervous!

I've read so many things to gague my approach - thankful for all who include science/industry sources, and a glimpse at the varied incubators they use.
here is one advocate for air cells as the primary clue. With green and dark brown eggs, it has helped me to wait and hope. I'm using the white eggs as an indicator of likely development for those who appear as growing dark blobs.

Tonight begins Day 18, so I'll add rope entwined around eggs to keep them from getting knocked over when pipped. Must decide if I will remove the iffy-looking eggs to a separate hatcher til the others are out. They had development, but might be quitters. Floaty embryo is visible. I did not see blood rings, or much veining. No smell or sweating. Will try to candle just those tonight. I read today that someone had slow starters hatch 10 days after day 21! Yikes!

No Pips or movement yet!

Candled Monday, day 17 when I had help, since i still have a bone healing and very limited use of my left hand for awhile. Most had awesome air cells and dark masses were large,

Removed 1 more Quitter, that's 3 total of the orig 18 shipped from N Idaho to my Portland, Oregon neighborhood. I ordered a dozen. We let 3 or 4 who seemed only partly developed remain in case they are still viable...but seems a long shot. I read someone saying they had one hatch TEN DAYS after day 21! It is rather nerve racking to not be able to see inside the colored eggs...and have to pull several of the light ones. Incubating on some basics that seem in order - wonder and hope. It really is easier to order Day Old Chicks!

Woke at 3 AM - to check humidity and stare at motionless eggs, LOL. Keeping humidity in the 60's, tho i overdid it and it spiked on pre-lockdown day 17 to 90 before gradually dropping to the 50's for that day. Our climate is humid - and the fan constantly running in the smallish incubator, so the first couple weeks i had it range from a low of 28 on some mornings to upper 50's some times...but mostly in the 40's after learning more about air cell development.

Hope they are still developing ok - with such a variety of breeds - i don't know if all can be as resilient as required to remain viable - especially the Cream Legbar i smunched then repaired. How it made it so far already seems a small miracle!

A few names we are considering...and at most i think we may need 8-10. My lucky number is eleven, but that is a LOT to ask. Will feel thankful to get 3 or 4 future layers of these awesome breeds. Any Roos may be valuable to someone for breeding - as the Purebreds are Greenfire line sourced - by FoxfireFarms. (I also asked for anything laced and Olive Eggers)

Number One - for the first to hatch - hopefully the Gold Deathlayer - who had a detached air cell repair and looked great at subsequent candlings! Might become my #1 layer by July!

BOBO - for a Spitzenhauben or silly looking chick if we get one.

Speester - for the 2nd grader's giggles - named for one of her dolls with huge eyes. Maybe a Cream Legbar. Not sure what breed deserves this name LOL - Audra will pick!

Rudy and Judy? if our Silverud's hatch. (Isbar)

Mose or Mosey - if our Mosaics make it

Need something french for possible Basque hens.

Blue - and Copper ? for 2 possible Maran's Chicks

Lacey - for a laced Orpington -

Dottie - for my first Wyandotte...tho a more independent name may be a better fit. May be naughty Dottie, LOL.
