No Pips or movement yet!
Candled Monday, day 17 when I had help, since i still have a bone healing and very limited use of my left hand for awhile. Most had awesome air cells and dark masses were large,
Removed 1 more Quitter, that's 3 total of the orig 18 shipped from N Idaho to my Portland, Oregon neighborhood. I ordered a dozen. We let 3 or 4 who seemed only partly developed remain in case they are still viable...but seems a long shot. I read someone saying they had one hatch TEN DAYS after day 21! It is rather nerve racking to not be able to see inside the colored eggs...and have to pull several of the light ones. Incubating on some basics that seem in order - wonder and hope. It really is easier to order Day Old Chicks!
Woke at 3 AM - to check humidity and stare at motionless eggs, LOL. Keeping humidity in the 60's, tho i overdid it and it spiked on pre-lockdown day 17 to 90 before gradually dropping to the 50's for that day. Our climate is humid - and the fan constantly running in the smallish incubator, so the first couple weeks i had it range from a low of 28 on some mornings to upper 50's some times...but mostly in the 40's after learning more about air cell development.
Hope they are still developing ok - with such a variety of breeds - i don't know if all can be as resilient as required to remain viable - especially the Cream Legbar i smunched then repaired. How it made it so far already seems a small miracle!
A few names we are considering...and at most i think we may need 8-10. My lucky number is eleven, but that is a LOT to ask. Will feel thankful to get 3 or 4 future layers of these awesome breeds. Any Roos may be valuable to someone for breeding - as the Purebreds are Greenfire line sourced - by FoxfireFarms. (I also asked for anything laced and Olive Eggers)
Number One - for the first to hatch - hopefully the Gold Deathlayer - who had a detached air cell repair and looked great at subsequent candlings! Might become my #1 layer by July!
BOBO - for a Spitzenhauben or silly looking chick if we get one.
Speester - for the 2nd grader's giggles - named for one of her dolls with huge eyes. Maybe a Cream Legbar. Not sure what breed deserves this name LOL - Audra will pick!
Rudy and Judy? if our Silverud's hatch. (Isbar)
Mose or Mosey - if our Mosaics make it
Need something french for possible Basque hens.
Blue - and Copper ? for 2 possible Maran's Chicks
Lacey - for a laced Orpington -
Dottie - for my first Wyandotte...tho a more independent name may be a better fit. May be naughty Dottie, LOL.
