I’m beyond excited! We just picked up some hatching eggs and gave them to our broody hen. She’s been broody for a little while, so I’m hoping she stays broody until they hatch. She went broody earlier in the year and stayed broody for a LONG time. I cleaned out a nest box, put the hatching eggs in, and took out all the other eggs in the coop. She immediately went and sat on them. Fingers crossed!

Exciting! How many? What breed(s)? I had a BR go broody RIGHT after we sold our rooster (he was far to aggressive, I did not want to have to do that but it was our only choice) so we never got any chicks! I didn’t buy the BRs for broodiness- since it’s rare in them, but I wouldn’t have complained if she managed to hatch out some eggs. I was kind of mad at her for deciding to go broody when the roo was gone, after so long with Him around lol

Exciting! What type of eggs are they?
Well the lady wasn’t sure what breed she had but I think they are probably New Hampshire or Rhode Island’s maybe? She said she has always called them Cinnamon Queens but they were much darker than any cinnamon queen I’ve seen, and beautiful deep red. I’ll have to post pics when they are grown to see what everyone thinks. They were only $2 😂 I’m supposed to get some Dominique eggs first thing in the morning also.

Hahahaha I would have been the same way! We had a rooster who got aggressive also. We haven’t had one since. I ordered chicks from Heartland Hatchery this spring and I have a Dark Brahma rooster who of course isn’t old enough yet. He seems calm, so far lol. The lady wasn’t sure what the breed name was of her chickens but I think maybe New Hampshire or Rhode Island’s, they were very pretty deep red. I’m getting some Dominique eggs first thing in the morning, so she will have about 10-11 under her. I’ve never done this so I guess I’ll need to candle them and take out any that don’t develop?

I couldn’t resist! I know it’s only like day three, but I had to candle the eggs 😂 some were hard to tell but I could see some developing already!!! Eeeek so excited!

Unfortunate update! It’s about day 14 or 15. Hoping someone who has been through this will see and can provide some insight. This morning the hen got out to get a drink like she always does. My daughter went out to make sure she went back to her nest. We left and didn’t come home until after dark. We went out to check on her and she was on a different nest of fresh eggs!!! Her eggs were cold! Anyone think there is any chance they will survive? The temperature was about 45-50 all day but I have no idea how long she had been off them.

Eggs are surprisingly resilient, do you have an incubator you can put them in? If not maybe try to switch out the broody's old eggs for the new ones.

The last egg hatched here was found ice cold, around half way point. I stuffed it back under the broody. And it hatched. There is still hope! Here is a picture of the little puff!

I don’t have an incubator but the hen sat on them all night. I checked this morning and could see some movement in a few of them!!! Crossing my fingers that we still have a good hatch rate.
