First Incubator - Maticoopx30 - Practice?

A barnyard mix is always fun 😊 Polish are sooo cute. I hatched some last week off eBay. I agree you have to try them all lol.

Oh they're SO so cute! My son's dream chicken is a buff laced (frizzle) Polish, so I HAD to try my luck with some of those. We've already got 5 Polish but we're getting 6 more Tolbunts this weekend (5 chicks + 1 14 week old cockerel). Should hopefully be one or two frizzled in with those, so might try to breed them back to buff laced to see what happens for my son's sake ahaha!

I really liked the breeds showing on the surprise, and most of them seemed quite uncommon to our area, so it'd make for a neat story if I manage to hatch them! (I edited the list in on the last page because I forgot to add it in, oops)

Polish are so so sweet. Those and our Easter Eggers are quick favorites of mine. The Polish are certainly a little skittish for the most part, but one of ours (Splash Hen) is a little more bold than the others and loves attention. 🤭 The eggers are just bundles of curiosity and energy!

Aha, it all worked out! The second seller is shipping tomorrow instead of Friday to help be sure they get here around the same day. I'm so thankful! :wee :ya I definitely will start a post about them if they make it to day 5 with progress. :love We are getting 2 Pavlovskaya, 2 Orloffs, 2 Swedish Flower Hens, and 2 Isbars in the assortment! Plus the Polish. I'm going to have so much fun trying.

figured if it wasn't a good idea I could return it and go for a separate one. I know the Maticoop comes with both built in, but I was definitely thinking two of each would be safest just to make sure the sensors were really right. 🤔
I found that when I had two of everything, NONE of them ever matched which left me bonkers. I bought a pricey incubator this time and just trust the dang thing. It hatched out my first eggs just right. I was stupid and put two hatches in the incubator and decided to use a cheaper incubator for lockdown. Stupid decision as the cheap one has had the humidity fluctuate from 10% to 70%. Stupid. I now have all the eggs back in my original incubator and have separated them as well as I can. I think I killed most with the cheap incubator but 1-2 eggs were moving this am. I dunno - I won't do that again...I just hate that "live beings" were killed due to my stupidity.

Polish sweet??? The only time I've ever been attacked by a chicken was by two young Polish roosters. Anytime I turned my back their way.

Mine have been utter angels so far! (Knocking on wood as I know puberty and just... nature in general can change their attitudes on a dime). They also started showing wattles for the probably-boys pretty early, but honestly ALL of my chickens have been pretty early developers to where I was fairly certain by 6 weeks, even on typically tougher to sex breeds so far. Cauliflower (our Splash Polish) was the one our Gold Laced Polish relentlessly eye-pecked when they were a day old, so I wonder if she remembers me helping her out and tending to her eye/correcting the bully because she's always running to say hello when I come into the coop. The bully got extra protein (as I was worried with how obsessive it was that it was a deficiency) and some corrective 'pecks' with my finger, and is now the "guardian" attitude of the flock. He's always breaking up fights and is respectful of my space but mildly curious. He's very sweet with the littlest ones of them all!

Yeah, both of ours per the hygrometer are SLIGHTLY off humidity wise. The temperature at first was showing 98? But then after letting it settle longer at the side instead of the middle, fluctuated between 99 and 99.8. Which, I blame on the forced air fan. I hope I can, at least. I figure if it's looking like they're struggling with the temperature, I can kick it up to 100 instead of 99.5 and it'll still be well within the range if it IS a touch lower. I'm trying to keep a good track monitoring.
I've read *a lot* of threads while preparing for my first hatch. I've seen so many people make mistakes, and I know for a 100% fact I will be one of them too. :hugs Heck, I'm honestly not expecting any to hatch from these (I put my first ever 21 eggs in today). And if it happens, it's no doubt something I ignored. (I know shipped eggs can have really poor rates, but none would definitely lean towards me goofing up royally) Heck, we had a three day old silkie with wry neck who I think I absolutely am the reason he didn't make it. Even with my best efforts, I think back and worry I over-hydrated/over-fed him, maybe TOO many vitamins, etc. It certainly feels bad to make mistakes that may have hurt or ended a chicken life, but in my opinion the fact you care so much makes you a great chicken owner. Love goes a long way. I'll be cheering you on that those eggs make it and bring you lots of fluffy joy!
