I have no idea how this duck got injured but it happened about a week ago... its wing is definitely broken. I'm not sure I really want to grab it so I can examine closer but from what I've seen there isn't any blood or a wound. She was sluggish and stand offish for 3-4 days ...not very active but still eating and foraging with her crew.

Definitely a change in personality which leads me to believe it was something traumatic like a hawk or a cat. The broken wing sits a bit lower and when she tries to stretch or dry off she only flaps the one wing.

Anyway... long story short. Broken wing.

I know ducks are pretty resilient but was wondering how some of you have handled similar situations? I'd rather continue to see if she improves rather than put her down. Spending hundreds for a vet to fix the wing isn't an option.

Im not sure i dont have ducks.

But to help you if it was me and my duck got hurt, i would grab her and examine her closer.

Then you can feel the bones to check if it is broken. And if it is, i dont think broken bones heal on their own. So you would need to see a vet or do a home made cast or something.

If it is an open wound, clean it out with warm water and tissues gently.

I would keep the duck on its own with food and water so it doesnt stress itself out and use its wings too much.

Let others comment because i dont keep ducks. Okay.

Without examining it closer there really isn't much feedback we can give you....it could be any number of things and could be compounded by something you can't see without actually inspecting the bird.

Lets not overthink this. I'm not asking people to post a guide on how to set and cast the wing so its 100% functional again. I'm just asking the community about their experiences and how they have handled broken wings in the past.

Has anyone left a break to heal naturally? Do most people here either take their birds to the vet or put them down?

By heal naturally I'm talking about healing broken. I'm not looking to make an attempt to set and cast a wing. I'm sure there are others here that have gimp ducks that have survived a few wars.

Hmm okay.

We stepped by accident on our chicks foot. He was about 2 months old.
Im not sure if it was broken or what but he couldnt step on it. Or he would walk and it looked painful.
The foot joint looked swollen and kind of blue.

I just restricted him to a cage and gave him a heat pad and he rested himself as it was painful.
After about a week. It looked visibly better and he could walk and run as normal.

All i did was restrict him from running around and kept him warm.

I should think it should heal but im not sure.
