First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

Well from all my research JG r a slow growing breed. I think that the cross would be worth a try. I am still trying to get a Welsummer x CX or a Blue splash Cochin x CX. But no luck. I wonder if my female is sterile or to big for the roo to "get the job done". I wonder if AI would work.

Ethel was here when I went out to get eggs!

I was so worried with all the predator problems I had she was a goner. It was a relief to see her eating and drinking. She talked to me a little bit but she was stand offish.

She had not lost too much weight and she looked well compared to last time she was broody.

Hopefully a dozen babies soon.

Well, we had an awesome visit with the guy for the Dept of Ag today! He visited with us for 3 hours! He thought that what we are doing is super awesome and we are in compliance. He gave us a ton of information and is going to be an ongoing resource for us to help as we grow. He also gave us tips on other things that we should do right away to head any other problems off at the pass.

Still dreamin of my big beautiful farm that we saw last weekend though.

Great news! Any chance he took professional exception to the number of horses next door? :) Or at a minimum, told her you were in compliance and to sit down and shut up?

Good for you Jessica. Gad your fed was likable, and things went well.

I think you should get some of those big bad spitting llamas to keep predators away. I hear they have a tendency to smell. I would think a herd of 50-60 would work. You can tell your neighbor you thought they were just furry horses....

Thanks for all the condolences. I am still seething about the fox.

First, Pearl. And let me tell you, he got a 25 lb. snack out of her (she was HUGE). Then the others.

I saw him on the neighbors coop roof on Wed. I have never ran through an acre of brush so fast in my life. I was able to scare him off. Since it was not my property, I couldn't shoot him.
I went to talk to her and she said he got 5 of her hens the other day. She has not had a single problem in 10 years, then BAM.

I have 3 traps out, 2 at his den. Nothing yet.
I saw 5 kits in our back acre yesterday. I hope when I get him, they move on. I also hope he has not taught them to hunt chickens.
The female has not been an offender, yet.

Anyhow, enough of me being angry.

The meatballs are doing great! They are not loving the heat so much, but they have plenty of shade.
Processing was set for this weekend, but they are not as big as I want them to be. They have until July 13 to grow. Then they have to be processed.
If it was not so much set up I would do a few here and there as they get big enough. I would likely be drunk for a week straight if I did that.

Jessica- Grats on all the thumbs up! Maybe your neighbor will simmer down a bit now.

JR- If you decide to cross the CX and JG, let us know how it goes! I am very curious.

Ralph- We need pics of your toads!
