so what kind of cone do you all use??
I sent my first one to camp..first bird I have done since a kid.
I tried 3 sizes of cones I have... none had the 12lb bird's head stick out

the XL turkey size was an almost... well I was squeamish and didn't want to hold his head. I just wanted the head to hang down, not looking at me, and chop it off with pruners. I let it hang there for 1/2 hr and when he did hang down , and I tried to chop, he pulled his head back up.... so I took him out and set him down, he sat there I said thank you Lord for the food ... and chopped the head off... and picked him up 10 paces away and put him in the cone to bleed out... actually the pruner was not bad because it did not cut the windpipe, but cut everything else... and I didn't have to hold his head and slit him ..big sissy girl that I am ( one of the few times I wish for a husband LOL)... w/- wing tips and skin he was about 8lbs

I think I'll try a cat littler jug.. the traffic cone didn't work out either when I did a dry run a few weeks ago.
yesterday it was 95 and high humidity and a couple of the biggest CX were suffering and need to go to camp.

I just use a piece of baling twine and hang em up by their feet... it has always worked for me.

Last weekend when I was butchering a few of my meaties I attempted to make a killing cone out of a gallon water jug. It fell apart where I had it screwed to the tree before the poor chicken's head was even off. I decided the tried and true feet tying method was sufficient for me.

ummm I guess the wings flapping wouldn't bruise the meat any worse than pinwheeling across the yard for 10 paces LOL

I have an old folding ladder set up with hooks, I use twine too. A few wings get broken and the joints pop out, but that is no biggie.

I have not found a large enough cone either..


Looks like a screw driver day at JR's.. Vodka for nerves orange juice for energy... Best wishes to you on camp day JR. It is a tough day for man and bird alike.

It's easy to hold their wings to keep them from flapping if you wish. If you hang them where they can't hit anything while flapping around (think tree branch) there is no bruising. Added bonus, is they bleed out more completely by flapping around.

It works for me.

We wrap a piece of cheap duct tape around the wings, hang them on a line by the feet, then slit....Quick and easy...they bleed out very well with no flapping, no bruising.

the cat litter jug worked ..thanks to your comment I used some big washers on 2 screws and it held up for the bird...it looks secure still for more uses... it is heavier plastic than the gallon of water they sell by me.

I guess I know why the guy was selling those cones for cheap.. he said he was getting out of poultry

the one that pinwheeled through the yard did bleed out better. Now if I get over being squeamish and slit their throat's ... I didn't even look when I chopped the head, just put the prunes and closed my eyes as I closed the pruners LOL... the rest of it doesn't bother me...

Do you guys get Traffic Cones out there on the highway ??

The traffic cones we get over here in the UK are very large and can be cut down to whatever size you need.
