First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

Dave I was out in the chicken pen gathering eggs, happened to glance in at the hybrids. The barred rock cross is REALLY coming along. I've already made up my mind that I'm keeping all the barred crosses. They seem to beat the others hands down.

What have you crossed them with ?
The last few years I bred Cuckoo Marans and Welsummers both very dark egg strains, I started crossing them using the Welsummer cock bird, this gave me sex linked chicks, chicks hatch black with males having a large white spot on there heads.
Hens ended up looking similar to copper Marans and laid very nice dark eggs and more than both parent breeds.
I think the barring gene brings a lot when cross breeding.

The last three hatches hens are the following:
Welp slow grow broiler
Silver dorking
Barred rocks
White jersey giant
Easter egger
Dark cornish
The only rooster I'm using at this time is the Saipan
400

My brother and I are headed primarily to white birds for no other reason than cleaner looking carcasses on the capons (they sell a bunch of them). Jason has very large dangerous dogs to protect his place at night and to a couple medium sized ones that run around during the day. He tells me that if he's lost any chickens in the last 5 years, he is not aware of it.

We rely on large area, 5 foot tall chain link fencing strung with monofilament fishing line with an outer barrier of Premier electroneting to protect our birds and that works very well. Each of our systems works well enough for the particular need but I couldn't deal with so many dogs nor be able to deal with essentially the work involved with a large kennel. Taking care of the birds effectively is expensive and fulfilling enough without adding drudgery to it.

ETA: Part of Brother's success in protecting his flocks in WV is the penchant for almost everyone in that valley to 'dispose' of every bird of prey (barring Eagles) that is stupid enough to fly low enough or take a second to sit in the wrong tree for a minute. Whole different culture there. I'm not knocking them, I just won't take a chance of running afoul of the FEDs this close to a Federal prison and besides, I'm considering applying for a job at their medical center.

My sympathies and my heart is with the people of WV on this. I wish I could dispatch every hawk, eagle or falcon that comes within 1/4 mile of my chicks.

I never want to know if they do it, I do not want to be able to be a "witness" against such great people.....

However, I live in the great liberal bastion of Minnesota where the majority of people live in the Twin Cities and are the tail that shakes the dog. They want there "organic" natural food, but do not want anyone to own guns and protect the food sources. The Bill of rights to most of them only has 9 amendments (4th of July rant over)..

I live on the farm I grew up on, there is only 13 acres left, the Fed stole 400 acres to make a "goose refuge" they kicked the farmers out and could not figure out why they never got any geese. None of them were smart enough to realize Geese eat grains and Farmers raise grains. The "refuge" is 30,000 acres. I am surrounded on 3 sides by this Federal Holy land. Which is patrolled by hundreds of rangers. Meaning if I ever dropped these flying wolves I would be in chain and prison faster than I could dial my lawyer. The chances of jury nullification in the St Paul is about nil.

BTW after kicking the farmers out 40 years ago, the feds have realized the "prairie" would become over grown with brush and scrub brush, so they have hired "farmers" to free range cattle in the 30,000 acres that our land use to be part of. However, you have to be rich enough to place 200 cattle in the "free range" to get a permit. If I sound bitter, I am......This is land my Great-great- Grandpa settled. I go visit his grave occasionally, just because I can. His settling here precedes statehood, some of his kids fought in the civil war.

Okay,, I think the rant is over now,,,maybe...

I am going to go pray for a Raptor disease to run rampart and kill 99% of them this summer.....
