First Time Egg Candler Scared!

5 out of the 6 are doing perfectly. Unfortunately the one guy with the bum leg would not eat or drink. I tried to dropper feed him but he just wouldn't have it. I just don't think he had the mental capacity. It was a real reminder that if you are going to keep a meaningful amount of birds and if your going to hatch eggs you are going to see some cute little fuzzy chicks die. It's a harsh view, but it's farm life and it made me realize how far removed we really are from farm like family's and good old real life lessons. We tried everything we could, but at the end of the day you are going to loose chicks and chickens if you hatch and keep them.

3 of them are in this pic!
Which one is Amy??? LMAO

I found an automatic egg turner locally so I'm building a new incubator for it this week. It looks like a Frankenstein Model 001 incubator. I hope to be setting eggs again this weekend, but they will be free eggs from a RIR over Red Sexlinks.
Good luck!!!! Hope to see lotsof littles. I started collecting from my pullets today for my first incubation with their eggs next week. Hopefully it's not a mistake. We will see.

The one in the center is actually Amy.

She is more grey and a tad bigger than the others.

Good luck with your hatch and keep us posted!

Just set my eggs for lockdown

. Out of 17 shipped silkie eggs I set 8 for lockdown. 6 were clear, and 3 were 100% quitters. I think I may have a late quitter or two in lockdown(but since this is my first hatch ever, IDK). Will keep you guys posted. Humidity is currently at 45% and rising. And temp is making its way back up...

I was using a egg turner and now at lockdown my temp is 97.5, is this normal because the eggs are sitting lower? I am using a circulated air incubator. What should I do?

I'm rooting for you Coleson! What is your humidity at now?

Just going from what I've seen in my cuckoo marans, may not fit your birds at all, but a head and face that light is always a rooster for me
I have heard that about wyandottes too. That males have more white/yellow on head and shoulders. Seemed to work for the first six I picked out a couple months ago. "Amy" also has slow wing growth compared to his sibs.

I would give it an hour still from when you opened it before lockdown. What kind of incubator? If it's circulated then taking the turner out shouldn't make a diff, but I don't have one so Im not sure. Maybe someone will chime in here. Your ok if it's a bit low for a while. It's over 102 that really wrecks things.

What's it at now? 97.5 is not too awfully low, some people intentionally lower to 98.5. But hopefully it went back up.

The humidity is now at 57% and temp is at 98.4. My incubator is a hovabator 1588. I filled the amount of troughs it said to on insructions but humidity doesnt seem to be going past 57???
