First Time Egg Candler Scared!

Ted is a cute name. Looks like another black? Is he moving much? The cord should come off by itself, as he gets some strength and starts moving around more. If you really want to try to remove it, you could crunch the shell and get the majority of it off, and just leave the piece of shell where its attached. I'm getting worried about your other eggs though. You've been in and out of the bator a lot. I'm assuming your humidity has been staying up there. I don't think you want to go through another Ted.
I am not going to open the bator until I take him out. No more pips but I hope to get another chick or two. Is it normal to lose so many during lockdown? Or is it normal for some to be 2 day behind the others?

The cord should eventually come off by itself. If it is still attatched by the time he's fluffed and you want to try him in the brooder, you can tie it off with some floss or thread up closer to the "navel" and cut it. (sc might have a heart attack,) but I would leave him in the bator for a good share of the day. He needs lots of rest and not to be picked on by the others. You might want to offer him some water w/electrolyte or sugar water though as I imagine he's probably a little more stressed and weak and he could have a bit of dehydration after all this.
When I take him out tonight I will replace the water in the brooder with sugar water? How much sugar do you put in the quart waterers?

I wouldn't put sugar water in the brooder, just mix up a little in a cup - like a couple pinches of sugar in 1/4 cup water, then give Ted a drink or two when you pick him up to put him in the brooder.

I it's like 1 teaspoon to the waterer, but I would offer him some in the bator or by dropper if he will take it. I myself have save a chick (electrolyte) in the brooder waterer for the first two days.

While we have a moment here...

@BYC910 I was thinking about your candler... Instead of putting the light inside the box, and sitting the egg on top, I would like to make something where the light sits on top (maybe in its own enclosure) but you put the egg into the box, with a peep hole cut in the box. I like to candle at different times, and I only have one good closet that I can get real darkness. So if its dark in the box, an I put the egg inside, then I could look through a peep hole. Maybe? The problem is something to hold the egg up to the light hole. I'd like to make some kind of ring, to sit the egg on (think of the old timey dip rings for coloring Easter eggs) but obviously more sturdy. And devise a way to lift the egg to the light source. Maybe just a rod that I can slide up and down, for different sized eggs.
Tell me what I'm missing...
with my candler you don't need total darkness I just looked at 3 maran eggs in the daylight in a shaded area one which is very dark . I the can see the air sack clearly and where it stops and the chick starts. If there's an internal pip I can see that. It's not the box its the bulb. I just went to home depot to get bulb and switch for the next one. they had neither. and they don't carry the same brand of fixture anymore. they have the same fixture just another brand and its cheaper. you want a LED bulb it's cooler and brighter . 400 lumens or more but I need to take my bulb out and check it .If it's a 4 watt bulb walmart has one for $11 I think it's a 4 watt bulb but not sure .now here's what your missing the egg has to sit over the light and no light can escape around it that 's where the brown or black felt comes in. it cushion's the egg and seals the light. now I would say build a box on a box but after day 14 you have to look at the egg from the top so you lay the box on it's side. what you want to do your going to need to lift the egg to the hole. I'm not sure how to do that but I'll give it more thought. I choose my fixture or should I say it choose me. I needed something better than the junk that came with my incubator .I stated digging in my junk and found them I had 3 .they had 50 watt halogen bubs in them when I checked them to see if they worked I had sun spots for two hours but was to hot. I'm trying to do a little bit every day towards the next one so I can post all the pictures. when I asked the man who sold me my maran eggs what he used to candle, he said a hand held but you can't see anything now let me say this I was so impressed with him and how he treated my wife and I. I made one and sent it to him he said he could not believe how good it works. the other thing I would tell you is every time you go to home depot or lowes or wherever check the clearance racks for ideals. look at and for fixtures

Maybe it's just my age, but I can't stop seeing Mic Jagger and Ted Nugent. I hope Mic has a huge beak.

You could use a thick black curtain setup for just your head. If you do something like that please take pictures because I bet it's going to look pretty silly.
