First Time Hatching Anyone With Me??

Alright, guys, I'm done with my first batch of chicks. I got 18 out of 23...not bad. The ones that didn't hatch were the same ones that were questionable when I candled at lockdown. One pipped and struggled all day, finally zipped nearly halfway and then died. That's the saddest part but there was nothing I could do at the time and from what I've read on BYC it probably wouldn't have made it if I had intervened.

I am a first-timer too, this is actually a science experiment with my son, but we are already making plans for our brooder and coop.

I bought an incubator and egg turner, figured the egg turner would be better since this is our first time, maybe when my son is older we will do this by hand. Haven't gotten any eggs yet, but may have them by Monday or Tuesday, so we might have chicks in time for Easter???

OMG OMG OMG!!!


I'm on day 19, went into lockdown yesterday morning and I can hear CHEAPING!! At least one chick has decided NOT to wait until official hatch day!! I can't see any pips yet but I have 28 eggs in a hovabator 1620n with those tiny windows!! ACK!! Is everything going to be ok with them trying to get out early? They can only cheap when they break into the air cell right??


PLEASE be ok tiny chicken!!

I am freaking out!!

i'm cleaning out my incubator getting ready for round two
and had five eggs that didn't do a thing
so i eggtopsied them
four had no development at all

one was pretty well formed, but never pipped

i read this could be related to a humidity problem
anyone else know about that?

was it too high? low?

my humidity spiked up to 70 or so a few times
but i was watching closely and took out the vent
caps when that happened, it lasted only minutes

i was in the low fifties on average on days one through eighteen

Came home from work, and found 2 chick hatched, and 5 more wth pips! Yippee!
