i'm just going to go ahead and hop in on this thread.
i just hatched out my first real batch (used a borrowed incubator before and had LOTS of help).
Results:
20eggs put in on 2/18 with a HD set for 3/11
Little Giant still air incubator with an egg turner, kept the temp @99.5, with some 90 times and a couple of times where it spiked to 105 during the first two days, before i could get it regulated properly.
candled eggs @7days, 3 were clear, and the rest showed veining, and some had movement.
re-candled clear eggs @21days, they were still clear, so i went ahead and removed them.
heard some peeping on HD, had one egg pipped that evening.
had 1st chick hatch 3/12am, and had 3 more follow that day.
had 3 more hatch out on 3/13.
had 1 pipped that evening.
lost one that hatched on 3/13, was pretty mushy.
by 3/14, pipped chick died in shell.
had one more pipped that wouldn't hatch, so on 3/16 i went ahead and broke him out. he's got a hunchback (i've named him Quazimoto) and struggled to walk a lot the first two days, but is still alive and doing ok.
the others didn't make it. so, there were 9 that hatched, 1 that died after hatching, and 1 that didn't make it out. so, i ended up with slightly less than half of all the ones that showed signs of life. a couple of the other chicks showed some mushiness, so i suspect that i added too much water near the end of the hatch. i thought finding and getting a hydrometer would be really expensive, so i didn't bother. perhaps i should have, and maybe i will with my next hatch.
i also had leg problems with 3 of the chicks, and another was stargazing, but with vitamin B complex, sugar, and duramycin added to their water, my stargazer is no longer freaking out and looking up, and one of the "hop-along" chicks is totally fine. hopefully, some more drugs and taping of the legs will get similar with the other two, soon.
