First time quail

Great response! Is the feed due to the protein content alone or is chicken feed too big? I like finding things i can feed to all and buy bulk

I want to make it like a rabbit hutch, Or a big dog kennel

Will they perch?

It's a protein issue—chicken feed isn't typically high enough. They can eat pellet feed when they're adults, but young ones do better with smaller, crumble-sized feed.

They don't perch, and they won't roost. Whatever you put them in, they'll do fine as long as it's big enough and they have enrichment to keep agitation down (e.g. branches, hiding places, multiple sand baths, treats).

Okay thanks you guys

I know i could read and get all this but iam not a strong reader and i never get the info i need!

So i got them! Wowie their cute

Their different colors, Any idea what they are

The brown one is wildtype coloration (Pharaoh), other one looks to be a golden Manchurian.

The Pharaoh is a boy (red-breasted, without speckles) which would hopefully make the golden a hen (note her black "headband").

Hi there. I hope your trade went well.

Quail may perch or roost, it depends on the birds.

Turkey grower is usually about right for quail with regard to protein. Mine do use oyster shell so you might want that on hand and grit if you're going to give them seeds. Chick grit works well.

1 square foot per bird is only the minimum but you really will want more if you're breeding and growing them out.

You'll need 3 to 5 females for one male. Multiple males in one breeding cage will likely fight so if you're breeding you may want more than one cage.

Taking confinement well doesn't mean it's a good idea to stuff a cage full of birds. They like places to hide and love dust baths so providing these options in the cage will be a good idea.

Quail do stink, worse than chicks in my opinion. More...gamey. If they're outside it's not a big deal. I couldn't keep them indoors.
