First time with a broody and eggs! Hatch with me! I need advice!

I have 4 hens sitting and 3 ducks sitting, I should be seeing chicks from the duckwing just any time. I think the ducks will show up in a couple weeks. Same with the silkie mamma. The other two just went broody this week. It's exciting.

How exciting! Don't ya just love this?!

We ended up with four babies out of 7 eggs.

Lil Mama abandoned the last 3 eggs.

Of those 3...

#1 My prized $5 copper maran egg had a fully formed dead chick inside. sniff...sniff...

#2 Green egg...peeping from inside. We cracked it open and tried to get mama back on egg. She would not. We removed chick but there appeared to be something wrong with it. Mama picked it up and flung it from the nest. I kept it warm but it died later that day.

#3 Lt. brown eggs...we cracked the shell and there was movement under the membrane. I put the egg underneath another broody but it was found the next morning crushed and the chick had died.

So...I'm thinkin' that next time I need to have a back up incubator or broody and I'll just stick the non-hatched eggs in there...just to be sure.

SOOO.......I have a PIP!!!!

at least one. I got home and she looked all pancakey, like normal- so I tilted up her front end and saw a pip in my silkie egg!!! I almost dropped her I was so excited!! I didn't want to mess anything up, so I didn't lift her off entirely to see what else was going on. She's "tucked in" for the night, so we'll see what things look like tomorrow.

There is nothing more adorable than a hen with chicks...I just love them...I also have an Easter Egger sitting on eggs..I do not need more chickens, I'm already overrun with them, but when she came broody I let her have 11 eggs. She's in the coop on her nest and not being bothered by the other hens....I also have 84 eggs in the bator, an order coming from Pips & Peeps..lav ameraucana chicks....I love this thread...peeps everywhere!!!!

YES, the other egg did hatch.. it was about 12 hrs behind the first egg. Here is Cotton w. her babies. happy hatch day to you. will be checking back here , so post pics when you can!

Welcome to the world little baby!! Not sure if you can see it or not- but we have a little silkie chick peeping (upper left of the egg)
